This is very concerning. We do indeed see temperatures rising to unacceptably high levels.

We have powered down all but two systems. Some systems are just going to be inaccessible at this time.

We understand the issue is due to snow on the roof affecting the cooling equipment.

Please do not contact us about not able to connect to our systems. They are down for safety reasons. We will get them up as soon as possible. Once the cooling is resolved. If it is not resolved before the exchange open, we will start putting traffic onto other servers in other data centers.

It is over 100 degrees Fahrenheit on the fifth floor at CH1! This is Equinix Chicago 350 East Cermak. Building operated by Digital Realty.

AccuWeather shows the temperature in Chicago now at -5° Fahrenheit. This is outside. Freezing outside. Overheating in that building.

Situation is not getting any better. Temperatures are still rising. Over 100°F. Our equipment is off, for safety reasons. Even though it should still be all right but we just want to operate with very safe margins.

Our main CME data distribution server, in CH1 with another provider, has entered a cooling state.

It is powered but it is not in a functional state.

This is not a problem, we can pull data, from Aurora DC3.

Edit: If this problem continues into the open Monday morning at around 830 to 930 a.m, there is a potential, for some market data degradation. In other words data lags. But we are taking the necessary steps now to minimize and/or eliminate that.

And we may not be able to deliver any US stock data in the morning either. That data feed may be down. This cooling failure incident at the data center is very serious.

We have powered down all of our systems in our own cabinet at CH1. Only network gear is currently running. Internal temperature of one of those devices is 60°C.

Every effort is being made to resolve this issue, including the vendor of the chiller equipment and Equinix’s most senior engineers, however, we do not yet have line of sight on the resolution timeframe. Yes we have complied with this. All of our equipment in CH1 is powered down, and we are using backup sites.

Users please understand, there will be degraded service, this evening. What you will observe, Is longer connectivity time to the Denali servers. Perhaps a minute versus about two seconds. And there is no connectivity at this time for stock data. Only futures.

We do have in the works backup connectivity for stocks planned. But this is more involved and as yet not implemented.

We will resolve, the long connectivity time, if it looks like this is going to be a problem into the morning.

We have now powered off our main distribution server for CME data in CH1. It is now down.

Temperatures were just too high and it had gone into a suspended state anyway. It is now going to start to cool down.

we are going to be distributing data, out of Aurora DC3 from a server there. Not the one used for Teton order routing. But another server.

we will also be distributing data out of Las Vegas which is a backup location. We have a very high capacity Internet there. 20 Gb. But only 10 Gb is utilized for CME.

We do have a lot more redundancy, that is in the works and planned. We are in an ok position now but we want to be in a much better position. And we are going to aggressively get all of this done, over the next 2 to 3 months.

Your Sierra Chart Message Log is going to continuously open, when there are failed connections related to stock data. For now just move the message log to the bottom of the screen out of the way.

The hard reality of what is happening in that data center is gradually becoming apparent. This is a catastrophic situation. If the cooling equipment has become frozen due to the weather conditions and the extreme cold and the cold continues, how are they going to solve this?

The temperatures are absurdly high. Not only is there the temperature within the data center itself there is the temperature within the cabinets, which have doors with like a mesh opening. So airflow is not so free-flowing through them. It is somewhat restricted. The equipment itself is dissipating heat, and creating a higher temperature within the cabinet.

Within our network equipment, we are seeing temperatures of 152°F. We are not sure what the prior temperature was, but it would be probably around 100° or less.

None of our servers in our own cabinet abnormally shut down. We powered them down well ahead of there being a problem. One of our servers, with another provider in that data center, did go into a low-power state and began to cool off and later on we shut it down.

We do not have an alternative to stock data. We are hesitant to power up one of the servers with these temperatures.

Basically what we see happening is we are going to start to move additional equipment to Aurora DC3 and set up additional backups until the situation clears.

We are not really sure what to do about stock data. We could power up the server and take a chance. We are going to do that and just hope it stays up. But we will hold off on this until the late overnight time before 4 AM. But that is also putting the entire stock data load on one server rather than distributed across three servers. So the stock data service will be somewhat degraded.

It is also possible that the situation worsens overnight. And they lose control. We are seeing rising temperatures slowly but rising. This is absolutely catastrophic. A major data center like that which is mission-critical for so many businesses. Think about the equipment damage.

We were informed the US stock market is closed tomorrow and there is limited trading going on at the CME . So the data center has time to work out this total disaster.

So we are not going to do anything with stock data, CFE data or NASDAQ Global indexes. All of these are out for the time being.

New update on Incident INC0025932: Equinix IBX Site Staff reports that temperatures have stabilized with an average temperature of 120 F degrees. One chiller is now fully operational, and another chiller is online but operating at reduced capacity. Equinix IBX Critical Facility Engineers continue to work on restoring the required 4-out-of-6 chillers to return cooling back to normal operations. Portable chillers are currently enroute with an estimated arrival time of 21:00 Site Local Time. Upon arrival, IBX Critical Facility Engineers and our vendor partner will work diligently to get the portable chillers online as quickly as possible. We will send another update once the portable chillers are operational.

If not already implemented, Equinix site staff highly recommends that customers power down non-essential loads within the data center and/or transfer those operations to backup sites to assist with efforts at lowering the temperature within the facility.

The severe weather in the Chicago area, contributing to the initial failure, continues to hamper efforts at resolution, but our teams are working diligently to resolve the issue as quickly as possible. We want to make a correction when we were quoting the network equipment temperature. For example we said:
Within our network equipment, we are seeing temperatures of 152°F.

We now realize, we were looking at the temperature of one of the switching microchips. Not the interior temperature of the switching gear equipment.

Right now we see the interior temperature of the switching gear equipment at 87.8°F.

And the switching microchip is 113°. Probably measured at the heatsink. These are still higher than usual but they will come down. And they are more than acceptable at this time.

Also for the record, for several months now it has been our plan to completely leave the CH1 data center and relocate, more servers to Aurora DC3, and also another data center in Michigan with dedicated connectivity to DC3, and either New York or Chicago for US equities and CFE data. The facility in Michigan we plan to go to is much better and more accessible and has all of the connectivity we need. It will not have a latency impact. That has already been examined closely.

The planning and research work on this has been well underway.

There was some hesitancy whether we would completely leave CH1 but it is a high probability we will after this incident.

And really would not surprise us, over the years, if there is more movement from Chicago to Michigan. Maybe we will be the first and pioneers in this regard. We have also become aware of an interesting project to put an undersea fiber communications cable across Lake Michigan connecting Chicago to Michigan.

We are also working, as soon as possible to completely leave CH1. This is likely to be a process that takes 2 to 3 months to fully complete but it will be done and we will be gone from that data center from hell. However, we are working on moving equipment immediately.

Regarding our LMAX and data feeds, we apologize that these have been unavailable. Actually the feed is up on one of our servers but there is not a full redundant configuration for LMAX. That will be done this evening. And we do apologize we overlooked LMAX.

We are going to be bringing up all necessary servers this evening. We are just waiting for the target temperature of 80 degrees Fahrenheit and at that time the data center is advising we can power up equipment.
