I was experiencing similar problems as another user and updated to 1701 and at exactly 8:30 am on the CPI print data stopped loading. WORST possible time!

It appears to be back now and I apologize for my frantic note but I had / have a lot "invested" and need my data and charting software to be absolutely reliable

I experienced a data outage as well. It appears to have coincided with the big move down in the market (on NSA shooting news?). Is this to be expected?

And not only that, but when the data finally came back, Sierra didn't fetch the missing data at all, I have to manually go to every symbol and hit delete and redownload. Could you please fix SC such that the data is always downloaded, and if not available, such that the user gets notified? Some more details: I only get real time data from you, but the account is a CQG one, whereby the data comes from you. Didn't observe something like this in the past when CQG data was available. Anyway, this is IMHO a problem with the software, and when you reconnect you must IMHO download all missing data. My GC chart showed a huge gap upon reconnect, there was missing data for some minutes. Delete and redownload fixed this, but it needs to be done manyally. This issue affected one of our servers. The cause is not known at this moment. It might have been related to the load from historical data processing. And not only that, but when the data finally came back, Sierra didn't fetch the missing data at all, I have to manually go to every symbol and hit delete and redownload. Could you please fix SC such that the data is always downloaded, and if not available, such that the user gets notified? . Anyway, this is IMHO a problem with the software, and when you reconnect you must IMHO download all missing data.

It always does and the Message Log definitively shows that but there was a timeout error encountered And then there is no further information the Message Log because it was not provided. This definitively always happens. It did not happen today. Maybe the software worked as expected, but the server didn't have the data or the connection timed out. Nonetherless, it's the software that must check again, the server cannot push the changes (I assume). Better safe than sorry. Yes, this is extremely defensive, but in this case warranted. |

Tentatively we are concluding that due to the extra load from historical data processing, and then due to the additional load from that market activity, this then created a situation which then affected other processes. In our experience this is really an operating system level problem because there was more than enough processing power available. A simple reconnect did not dowload the missing data, I did try it. My beef is with the historical data, because that affects me long term in too many a way to list. And IMHO it is possible to fix this in such a way that it won't happen again. You don't have to be paranoid at all stages, but after a connection drop/timeout, full steam paranoia is really helpful (e.g. check known/received samples inside a time window against the server etc.) Of course, being online 24x7 is nice, but I know what this means, and I know outages happen everywhere. Who cannot live without it, needs redundancy at all levels, including RT data feeds. |

We are now more clear about the cause of the problem. This was a network I/O performance issue at the operating system level. It is very disappointing this issue happened, especially after our recent announcement here and improvements: Performance Improvements with Sierra Chart Exchange Data Feed The work that we did is unrelated to this, and was not going to help if the operating system itself is struggling with network I/O processing for whatever reason. We do think the above normal file I/O at the time was impacting this as well in our experience. There is more than enough CPU power on that server. While we have seen a related incidents like this years ago, we have not seen anything like this lately. So that is good but obviously is a concern. We did finish with some work this evening to reduce file input output which we think is going to help avoid the issue. The servers do handle a large amount of historical data processing as well. We are going to add new settings to Sierra Chart to adjust the historical data timeout and the number of retries. Currently there is no retry when there is a timeout. Thanks, although the sleep part was only when I had to step away earlier for an appointment. There were a few brief outages later while my machine was fully awake, which, I believe are also documented further down in the message log. I can't rule out that it's something on my end, but after yesterday's occurrence I'm keeping a much closer eye on things. |

Any other issues we are certain are not on the Sierra Chart side. Yesterday's disconnection incident, not related to the sleep, was a rare case. We just want to quickly update this thread and explain that it is clear that the incident that occurred on one of the servers at February 14 during a very active period which led to an interruption of the data feed on one of the servers for about two minutes, was due to historical data downloading for Dow Jones and S&P indices that we were obtaining from the Barchart system. That was expected to complete in the evening but went on into the morning. We should have made sure that process was stopped. Why this was impacting it, is not technically clear to us because it was not an issue of lack of CPU time. We think this is more of a problem related to some I/O limitation the operating system experienced. But we certainly understand how to avoid these issues. This was an isolated incident. We have also released additional performance improvements this week to make latency extremely low during very active times. Also in version 1705 and higher of Sierra Chart there are settings to control the timeout and number of retries for historical data when downloading from the Sierra Chart servers.
