SC Freezing on Chart Loading/Calculating

I use one primary instance with minimal chartbooks, for fast charts/execution only and switch symbols using a watchlist on them. Sometimes on a symbol, at a given time, I need a very small volume chart for it. Later, I may switch the chartbook to a high volume symbol or during a busier time. This causes the primary execution instance Sierrachart to lock up as the chart loads/recalculates the tick data with a small volume chart setting on the new symbol. This usually happens by accident. Is there any way to stop this loading once initiated without waiting for it to complete? And is there any way to avoid this freezing up the entire Sierrachart application when this happens/while the chart is reloading? Date Time Of Last Edit: 2022-03-23 20:42:42

Our apologies, we thought this had been answered. In terms of stopping a loading chart, when you see the black and white notice of Loading, it states on there "Click to Cancel". If you click on that notice it will stop the loading and the chart will be blank. You can make whatever changes you need from there and when you apply those changes the chart should reload. If it does not, for whatever reason, you can reload the chart by selecting "Chart >> Reload and Recalculate". Your entire Sierra Chart should not be locked up while it is loading a chart. Although the interactions may not be fluid, you should be able to change charts and do some other work while it is loading. Please double check this. Sometimes click to cancel works, sometimes it does not and the entire Sierra Chart does lock up for a long time and needs to be terminated. This is the only situation it happens under, and it does not affect any other programs or situations, or even the other instances of Sierra Chart.

Are you certain that the entire Sierra Chart is locked up in this case? Keep in mind that when you click Cancel in this case the chart will stop loading, so the chart will be blank. So it can appear that you can not interact with the program, but you should be able to change charts or chartbooks and select menus. Let us know if you are definitely not able to interact at all after you Cancel loading a chart. Yes I am certain, because sometimes when it works, I can click to cancel and it stops loading and goes blank, and then I can change the setting on the chart to re-load it, as well as switch to other chartbooks. The times it does not work, I cannot click to cancel, the cursor changes to a spinning/loading light blue circle icon and I cannot stop the loading, or switch chartbooks, or do anything else within the entire Sierra Chart instance. I am not sure what causes the difference. |

Please set the option for Global Settings >> General Settings >> Save Message Log to File to Yes. Then, if the system locks up on your again, we want you to attach the most recent Message Log that is in the Logs folder under your main Sierra Chart installation folder, to this thread. It probably will not have any information, but it is the first place for us to start.

And is there any way to avoid this freezing up the entire Sierrachart application when this happens/while the chart is reloading? Yes, if you look at the chart, that is loading you can left click where it says "Click to cancel" to stop the loading process. If that does not work and the entire program is in a frozen state, the frozen state must be relating to study calculations being performed, which can be due to a large number of bars in the chart which can be the case, if a very short timeframe has been set for each bar. There is no way to stop that until those are moved to another thread but that is a very involved complex task which is not going to happen anytime soon. What is best practice/quickest recovery of entire Main execution instance in this frozen state? |

If you believe the system is in this state because it is calculating studies, then the only thing you can do is wait for the calculations to complete. If you believe that the system is actually "locked up" and not responsive due to some kind of computer glitch, then you would have to terminate the program through the Task Manager (or reboot your system).
