Issue: Resource Error > Chartbook Scramble

Hello,

I just had the weirdest issue with Sierra Chart. This has never happened and I want to make sure my configuration is correct so that it doesn't happen again.

I am trading on 4 instances of SC on the same machine. I have 3 denali data connections and one rithmic data connection. Some functions weren't working for me, so, I went to restart everything. When attempting to close the rithmic instance, I received a resource constraint error when I tried the Save All command to save my chart books. I tried three times and the error came up. (Apologies, I did not capture the error at the time.) After the 3rd time, I hit X in the corner, it asked me to save all, I confirmed and then it closed.

Here's where it gets weird. I re-launched all 4 instances. When I pulled up my chartbooks for the rithmic instance, they were all identical to one of my other instances. Same symbols, same studies on the chart, etc. I closed without saving and tried again. Same thing. Needless to say, I had to rebuild all of my chart books.

Has this ever happened - one instance of Sierra Chart opens with the chartbooks of another instance? To be clear, these are not sub instances. These are entirely different instances in different directories.

Thanks for any assistance or guidance at anything I can do to prevent this in the future.

This should never occur. Each instance is completely separate and does not know anything about any of the other instances. This is true for Sub-Instances as well.

We really do not know what might have occurred. We do wonder if there may have been a problem with the shortcuts you are using, and perhaps it wasn't the instance you thought. But it sounds like it is not something we can figure out at this time.

The other thing we want to point out is that you can go to the backups of your chartbooks in order to recover them, rather than recreating them. Refer to the following:

Thanks John. I've been using SC for years and have never seen this. If it happens again, I'll remember to take screenshots. I had a trade setting up, so, I was a little distracted.

I'll check the shortcuts, etc. I'll also make sure I have DTC server turned off. You never know. And, thanks for the backup link. I didn't realize that was there!

Hey Guys,

Okay, I shut everything down last night. I'm not getting an error, but, I am getting the chartbook scramble again. It's inverted this time. Maybe because it's the last instance I opened, but that last instance is now only showing the chartbooks of the rithmic instance. I'm not sure what you need me to send you for troubleshooting since there are no errors.

I have attempted to restore the files. In my backup directory, I found the files with the timestamp of last night, when I closed the platform. I moved those into my data folder after cleaning it out of anything else. I also renamed the files. When I launched the platform again, I still have the chart layouts from the other instance. This is not a case of mistaken identity between the instances and detached windows. I have them running on two different windows virtual desktops to make sure I'm not confusing one with the other.

Other note: the denali instance that is now showing the rithmic chartbook layouts was a copy of the rithmic instance. I'm also using a third party user study, which may also be contributing to the issue. I'm not sure.

I plan to do a fresh download and install of SC.

Thanks for any assistance.

Reinstalling Sierra Chart is never the answer. Whatever is occurring is occurring for a reason.

Please check each instance and make sure the Data path is set properly for that instance. You can not share the Data folder between instances, Sierra Chart is not setup to handle that situation. Select "Global Settings >> General Settings >> Paths" and check the entry for "Data Files Folder". Make sure each instance is set to a different Data folder. It is best to have this located under the installation folder, and you can force this by setting the option for "Always Use 'Data' Folder Within Main Folder" to "Yes" (it's just under the Data folder Path).

If the Data Folders are all good, then we have to ask if the custom study you are using is setup, in any way, to move files or look for different chartbooks, or something along those lines.

Well, I was hoping that would be the issue. But, no. My paths are set correctly and independently from each other.

I do have a complete fresh install and that is working for me. I left the old one in there. So, if you have something else to test/check, let me know.

This is the custom study - https://www.simplesystemtrading.com/local-trade-copier/. It's been working fine with 3 separate instances for the past month. Adding this 4th instance is when the scramble started to happen, and only between this 4th instance and the one it was copied from.

How do you open your chartbooks when you start Sierra Chart?

Lately, I've been using File > Open All. Only the chartbooks I need are in my list. The names correspond to the chartbook for the respective instance.

That is most likely the reason for the issue. Select "File >> Open All" uses the "Recent File" list and opens all the chartbooks in that list. If you copied the installation from another installation, then that Recent File list could have been related to that other installation still. If you still have that installation, you could verify this by clearing the Recent File list and then opening the Chartbooks through "File >> Open Chartbook". Then close Sierra Chart and open again using "File >> Open All" (as the chartbooks in the list will all be from that installation).

That sounds a bit strange. When I first opened the chartbooks, I had to individually select and open them to get them into the recents list, which means I selected the local versions in their respective instance. Also, on the first day, instance 1 showed the chartbooks for instance 2 and it was the inverse on the second day.

I'll do some testing.
