Sierrachart does not work with OEC

I am now paying for SC (first month) and am trying to use it with my account at OEC. I am using version 1094 of SC.

When I try and do any intraday charts (no matter what type of chart) with the M6EH4 and M6BH4 contracts(and the symbols for these micro currency contracts are from the OEC list of instruments in SC), I am only seeing prices for today. If I want to look at say 30 days back, it is all empty. I am not having this issue with any of the other symbols I am looking at (e.g. ES, FDAX). Also, earlier today, the M6BH4 (British Pound) chart actually displayed alternating prices for the EURO as well as the British Pound. Some very interesting chart patterns emerged from this, but it clearly is not trade-able.

Why are these things happening and how do I fix them?

Also, yesterday, the ES chart simply froze about 10 minutes into the US open. I tried to "reload and recalculate' the chart, without success. I had to shut-down SC and reload. I never had such issues when using SC with IB or AMP. What is going on?

It looks like Sierrachart (at least the latest version which I am using) is not working with OEC and I would recommend, that anybody contemplating OEC or trading with OEC already should chose a different charting software, until SC have sorted this out, as at the moment, SC is clearly not fit for purpose for use with OEC.

With the connection method that Sierra Chart uses to OEC, OEC provides very little historical data. Usually 1 day of historical tick data. This is all. We have made a change to maintain more historical data for this symbol and that is currently being maintained.

To access this historical data going forward, restart Sierra Chart. After this to get the additional data, go to the chart, select Edit >> Delete All Data and Download.

Also, earlier today, the M6BH4 (British Pound) chart actually displayed alternating prices for the EURO as well as the British Pound. Some very interesting chart patterns emerged from this, but it clearly is not trade-able.
Looking at the data now, we do not see this. When you see this again, let us know and provide a chart image and we will report the issue to OEC. Instructions to provide a chart image:

If you notice this, select File >>Disconnect and then Connect to Data Feed. Almost certainly this would be an issue on the OEC side. The data feed stopped from their server. If Sierra Chart detects that the connection is lost it will reconnect within one minute. Usually immediately.

It does work, but there are clearly some issues and these are on the OEC side. Not the Sierra Chart side. So we need to report the issues to OEC so they can correct them.

Thanks. Funny, and OEC tell me the issues are at your end. Well, I don't care, as I am likely to move on from both SC and OEC.

OK this is not surprising coming from general technical support at OEC. It is very easy to make such a blanket statement. We are more qualified to make that determination than OEC because they are not intimately familiar with the particular issues like we are.

In any case, we did answer each of your items and explain them. And we were able to resolve the historical data issue.

Also, earlier today, the M6BH4 (British Pound) chart actually displayed alternating prices for the EURO as well as the British Pound. Some very interesting chart patterns emerged from this, but it clearly is not trade-able.
Whatever the cause of this is, we would look into it and discuss it with OEC and resolve it. It would seem unlikely to be an issue on our side, but we do not know the details of it. And if it is an issue on our side, it is only because they do not have very well defined FAST specifications. This has been a point of significant difficulty for us with the new connection method. And we have pointed this out to them.

There are other services we support than OEC:

So we recommend using another one for now, if you are happy with Sierra Chart otherwise. If not, that is OK.

We also set up enhanced and extended historical data support both for M6EH4 and M6BH4 and can do other symbols as well.

One issue users have reported with OEC is a lagging issue, we were spending some time looking into this issue today, and concluded it has to be on the OEC side. Sierra Chart can process over 100 symbols over a FIX connection with no measurable CPU load. It would be a CPU loading problem which would cause a lag on the client-side. But that is not the case here.

You are the first person to report a problem with the data feed actually stopping. Clearly an issue like that would be on the OEC side if there still continues to be a heartbeat sent through. And they were sending a heartbeat through, if there was not a reconnection after about a minute. Although we could test this. Maybe there is something wrong with our detection of heartbeats. We will do that now.

You had said you lost the connection for 10 minutes.

Another issue, we pointed out to OEC, was how historical data requests were counting towards the subscription limit. They did resolve this.

Sierra Chart is very well engineered software that is C++ native code. We do not use .NET or prewritten FIX or FAST libraries like OEC does. Therefore, we have confidence in what we offer. Whereas OEC, can have its issues with software components that are not within their control.

We looked into our handling of heartbeat messages and it does function properly:

OEC FAST Market Data session: Disconnecting due to a loss of activity. No activity for at least 64 seconds. | 2014-02-20 17:55:09
OEC FAST Market Data session: Sending a Logout message. Text = Disconnecting due to loss of activity. | 2014-02-20 17:55:09
OEC FAST Market Data session: Remote side disconnected without completing the logout sequence. Final messages may have been lost, although unlikely. | 2014-02-20 17:55:09

Will reconnect to the server in 2.0 seconds Select File >> Disconnect to prevent further connection attempts. | 2014-02-20 17:55:09

Therefore, the data feed stopping and there not being an automatic reconnection would be an OEC issue, assuming you were looking at an active futures contract.

You really want to know the truth. After looking into the connection issue you had, what we found out that OEC is not sending heartbeat messages over the FAST connection as is required by the protocol. We are going to report this to them. This is the reason why you lost a feed for an extended time.

Looks like you are working to resolve this. I will point OEC tech support towards this thread also. Hopefully this will help going forward. And thank you for fixing the M6B and M6E issues (although I have not yet been in the platform and tested it).

It is best that you let us know about the issues and we will be in contact with OEC developers about them.

OEC tech-support is not going to be qualified to handle this. We are using one of their more advanced connection methods.
