[Locked] - Spreadsheet Study Programming Disappears After Saving?

Twice tonight I have programmed a spreadsheet study and the work is gone after I have saved it. First time I saved it as a study collection with the default spreadsheet, the second time I save it as another named spreadsheet and still, when I went back in and opened the spreadsheet the programmed columns were blank. Each time I have checked all the sheets within the spreadsheet.(about 4 hours of work) I thought to copy the sheet to Excel as what I probably should have done; what am I doing wrong?

Just to make sure the spreadsheet is actually saved, go to the Spreadsheet and select File >> Save after entering some data. Do you still notice the problem?

Did file "save" after some programming and closed SC. The programming was intact when reopened spreadsheet. It would be nice to have a "save" button on the spreadsheet menu itself so you can save while working instead of saving the whole chart book; (at least more intuitive). I have several other studies in spreadsheets and have not lost them. I think what happened is I messed with the chart the sheet was referring to and it got lost the 1st time but the second time it should have been there because I didn't close SC, just saved (I thought)the sheet to another name; (but didn't rename).

Let us know if you continue to have a problem and the particular steps to reproduce the issue.

We are not aware of any case where when a spreadsheet is actually saved, it will not be.

We will make a change where when a chart is active in a Chartbook and you select File >> Save, any spreadsheets associated with the Chartbook will also be saved.

More follow up:

15:05 - When programming a line into the spreadsheet SC crashes and obviously you loose what you have programmed (just happened)
15:45 - Sierra does not like being programmed while running the market...keeps crashing; having to do all programming in Excel then pasting into SC spreadsheet.(I have enough horse power)

15:30 - I have a sheet #22 I want to delete among sheets 1,2,23, when I delete it.. it comes right back, possible bug? Can't delete.

15:55 - Sometimes the formula will not copy down the column, only pastes into the cell. Just had that and a crash.

16:25 - If fact I can't paste anything into this spreadsheet now crash only, and the same spreadsheet was working fine before I lost the spreadsheet yesterday... I am shutting down and restarting this machine.

16:30 - I restarted everything and chart #22 is still there, (same as #23 which is the primary sheet I am working on) I pasted the last formula into #22 and only one cell (X3) fills in the formula. I paste the same formula into #23 and just sits there. So the chart that I am referencing a 60 day 2 tic Renko, I change to 30 days to see if maybe I have over loaded something and crash again. But I saved the log just before I changed the date because of an exception error came up on last line refering to default spreadsheet. It is below. I am done giving up, had a great day trading and calling it quits. I will check email later for anything you might need from me.

Sierra Chart is designed to be very reliable and stable software so the abnormal shutdown problems you are experiencing should not be happening, may have already been fixed, and if not will be.

The first thing we need to do is update to the latest prerelease. Do that with Help >> Download Prerelease.

Let us know after the update if you still experience the abnormal shutdown problems.

15:30 - I have a sheet #22 I want to delete among sheets 1,2,23, when I delete it.. it comes right back, possible bug? Can't delete.
This would mean that you have a chart with number 22 that contains a Spreadsheet study.

15:55 - Sometimes the formula will not copy down the column, only pastes into the cell. Just had that and a crash.
What specific Sheet column are you entering data into? For that particular Sheet number is there a chart with the same number that has a Spreadsheet study?

I performed the upgrade and still have SC crash when I paste or type this formula into the column X:

=IF(Y3=0,X4+Z3-Z4,IF(Y4=0,Y3,X4+Y3))

attached a sample of the sheet pasted into Excel as values.

This would mean that you have a chart with number 22 that contains a Spreadsheet study.
Thx... I deleted chart #22 and sheet #22.

What specific Sheet column are you entering data into? For that particular Sheet number is there a chart with the same number that has a Spreadsheet study?

I believe nothing happens because there is this message in the log:

Chart: ESM5 [CB] Renko 2t #23 | Study: DefaultSpreadsheetStudy | Exception occurred while calling study function. | 2015-03-14 13:54:30 *

For your information: see example attached in Excel (Book1.xlsx), I copy and pasted the values into Excel with the formulas in text above columns X,Y,Z and hi lighted the good working formulas in green and the error formula in red. This is for chart #23 and is sheet #23 of the default spreadsheet.

Hello again, just after I sent the last message I decided to change the error formula to shorten it and take out the nested "if" statement and now SC crashes every time I try to open it. I know this is weird because I know SC is a stable platform but leave it to me to be able to crash something! I might move my \data\ fold to another area and try to re install SC, not much else I can do now.

PS I have the spreadsheet set to 300,000 rows if that means anything.

I got the programming to work without crashing SC; reduced the chart#23 to 5 days data (24hrs)and the rows in the spreadsheet to 5000. I had the sheet set to 300000 rows (actually 600000 before the programming) because I was doing a years study for statical analysis. The "new spreadsheets seem to have a limit, not that I need 300000 rows but could you let me know what the limit is. This study that we are having problems with is for a daily trade decisions and is fine set to the times I have now.

Clearly the problem is related to the large number of rows and we will look into why that is an issue. It should be gracefully handled and not cause a crash.

Thanks and let me know the outcome and the limit of sheet size if any for future reference. I am using these sheets frequently now for statistical analysis.

Well we are back to crashing again; I cannot even start SC;

What happened is I did another spreadsheet study in 6eM5 and on a 1 min chart for a year about 20,000 rows and works fine (this is with 6e and ES chartbooks open). I did the same study in 6e 15 min. chart and when I input the formula referenced above (post 11) SC crashed and will not come back; this is with only ES chartbook open. The only thing I have done since we last talked was I went back to the current version of SC rather than the pre-release version you had me update to. This was because I was having a problem with it crashing on something else (sorry don't remember) when I changed back all has been working well.

Maybe because I have all my studies in the "default spreadsheet" it may be at its' limit? What would that be?

I'm not sure what I will try next maybe move the data folder again to revive this beast; please advise, thx.

Follow up: my problem is definitely a spreadsheet problem; renamed the defaultspreadsheet and SC comes up. Is there a limit on the spreadsheet? Maybe I should have more than just one to service all my needs? How do I get SC to open with the old sheet so I don't loose all my programming?

I am back up but must say I have been an SC user since Jan'15 and am disappointed in the stability of the spreadsheet study function of SC. For someone like me to crash a very fine platform as SC with 3 lines of code is puzzling me. I have programmed Excel in VB for years and have crashed it only enough times to count on one hand.

By renaming the old default spreadsheet SC gave me a new one that is blank. I had copies of my code so I could paste it back into the refreshed default spreadsheet without spending an hour trying to remember what I wrote and with two charts and SS studies (1 chart-book open )it works fine.

Now I have only two spreadsheet studies (two charts), a third chart (in 2nd chartbook) with a SS study of 10000 rows still crashes SC. The log entry way down at the bottom (see below) describes the issue; same code on the same two "other" spreadsheets that are working. After the log comes up with the error, I go to delete the cell with the formula and then is when SC crashes.

When I adjust the 3rd chart to 5000 rows and only its' chartbook open it works also. But there is definitely a limit be hit; can't have them all open at once. Thx...

St.

I have identified the source of this problem in the software, and am working on it now. If you need to continue work on your spreadsheets right now, you should be able to do so by reducing the number of rows to a much smaller number, like 1000, as a temporary measure. Once this problem is fixed, you should be able to go back to your original number of rows.
