Good evening folks new user here trying out Sierra chart after a lapse of a few years when I tried it first. I have a quick question about setting up the volume by price study. My chart timeframe is 30 minutes and I’m setting up daily volume profiles, and I noticed that my value areas and the point of controls are different than what I see on thinkorswim or trading view. I noticed that in the calculation method there is total volume and also total trades when I choose total number of trades, the value area and the point of control are closer to what I see on thinkorswim or trading you. However, I thought the volume by price is supposed to take the total volume And if I use that method, the point of control and the value of areas are completely different from what I see on other platforms. I’m pretty sure this is a setting error on my end, but I wanted to understand which is the preferred method for the volume by price that would get me closer to what I see on the other platforms Thanks |

Adjusting the ticks to 4 seems to help getting the values closer when using total volume. Maybe that’s the trick ?

Do not adjust the actual "Tick Size" of the chart. If you want to combine multiple ticks together in the Volume by Price study, then use the Input for the study of "Ticks per Volume Bar". Refer to the following: Volume By Price Study: Ticks Per Volume Bar The Value Area and POC are going to be based on the underlying data for the selected Calculation Method. If you want these to be based on Volume regardless of the calculation method for the bars themselves, then set the Input for "Value Area, POC, Peak and Valley Based on Total Volume Always" to "Yes". Refer to the following: Volume By Price Study: Value Area, POC, Peak and Valley Based on Total Volume Always We can not help with differences between what you see on Sierra Chart and other systems. We can only say that we stand behind our calculations and they are correct. There are any number of items that can lead to differences in the profiles. I see. I adjusted the Ticks per Volume bar itself to 4. What I was noticing was at tick per volume bar at 1, the value area and POC for last Friday was at the bottom, while we can see all the volume was towards the top.. Not sure why and that is what the other platforms were showing while I know you don't compare, that is what I was going off. as per the Calculation method, is setting that to No is the default setting?

The "Value Area, POC, Peak and Valley Based on Total Volume Always" is set to "No" by default. If you want it to be "Yes" all the time, then refer to the following: Chart Studies: Using Custom Default Study Settings If you think there is something wrong with the calculation for certain data, then we would need to see an image of what you are seeing. Here is an example of QQQ for today. Ticks per volume bar is set to default value of 1. calculation method is total volume. You can see the POC is not really the node where the volume is the most visually so why would this be the POC?

We would need to see an image of the chart with the POC not extended (or not highlighted at all) in order to be able to see the underlying bar. Also, we do not understand what the 2 POC lines are from. We think the one on the bottom is from a previous profile, but we really can not say for certain.
