After I choose a symbol to chart, I can choose intraday or historical. I understand the initial difference between the two, namely that historical is downloaded in daily increments and intraday is downloaded at the tick level. But I am confused between the two when I change bar intervals. It seems that either download can be changed into any interval you want. For example, I can change historical downloads into 10 min bars or I can change intraday into weekly bars. Is there a need to initially download a new symbol choosing either historical or intraday, since after the download you can change the bar interval? I understand how dailies can be made from intraday, but do not understand how intraday can made from dailies. Also if I have two charts (same symbol), how does one know which chart is constructed from intraday vs historical. This is when both charts have lets say the same bar interval. I hope this question was clear... Thanks |

Sierra Chart will use either the historical Daily chart data file or Intraday chart data file depending upon the timeframe of the chart bars. Daily, Weekly, Monthly and higher timeframe chart bars will always use historical Daily chart data. Other bar timeframes will come from Intraday data. So in "Find Symbol" the option of choosing "Open Historical Chart" (daily bars) vs "Open Intraday Chart" (60 min bars) is redundant? And it doesn't matter which one I choose if I am changing the bar interval to something else like weeklies or 10 min bars? Am I reading that correctly? Thanks

You could consider it this way. But to say that it is redundant is not really accurate. You may only want a Historical chart or just an Intraday chart.

So if I want 10 min bars, does it matter which option I choose? I would still have to change the bar interval after the download. Not trying to be a pain, just trying to understand the difference. "Open Daily Bar Charts" vs "Open 60 min Bar Charts" would be my understanding and accurate, yes? My gut feeling tells me there is more to this than that.
