Workflow for saving/iterating on spreadsheets

What is the preferred workflow for iterating on spreadsheets? I have lost work a number of times because I cannot figure out how to save a spreadsheet to a newly named file, like a simple Save As. I have started creating new sheets and copy/pasting work into them, but the multi-sheet system is perplexing as well.

Any suggestions on how to save new versions of a spreadsheet as you're working on it in the same way you'd make a commit or just Save As to create a newly named version?

Thanks!

When the spreadsheet is selected, File>>Save As saves the spreadsheet with a new name. You will need to change the study settings if you want to use the new name.

Thanks. You're saying that each time I save the spreadsheet as a new name I need to copy back all of the study settings and formulas?

No. You need to change the Spreadsheet Name in the study settings window, or it will continue to point to the old one. If you want to avoid this, just do File>>Save All and the chartbook and spreadsheet will both be saved with one click. Or when the spreadsheet is selected, File>>Save will save any changes you did to the spreadsheet.

Okay, is this what you suggest?
1. Finish work on a new draft that i'd like to save with a special name
2. Go to File, Save As and enter a new name
3. It then CLOSES the spreadsheet (WTF?)
4. Go back into Studies, then to the spreadsheet study settings
5. Select the new spreadsheet I just saved and Apply/OK.

Okay, I get it (just practiced it three times). Why would it close the spreadsheet you just saved though? It should switch over to the new spreadsheet automatically, or open the one currently saved in the spreadsheet study.

Thanks Bradh!

This is not going to work properly when using the Spreadsheet Study with a Spreadsheet. The automatic closing does make sense because in this case the spreadsheet object is being managed by the Spreadsheet Study and if it has a name which is no longer being referenced by a Spreadsheet Study then it automatically closes since that Spreadsheet was automatically opened by the Spreadsheet Study.

You really just need to make backups of the different states of your spreadsheet files through the Windows Explorer.

For a professional tool I'm shocked by the need for this work around.

What about using multiple sheets? Any downside to just copy/pasting my work into a new sheet and naming it?

Yes you can certainly work with multiple Sheets within the same Spreadsheet window.

Thanks. Where is the Save Chartbook As menu item? It appears to be missing from the File menu.

I just decided to investigate this very question for the exact same reasons, and I think a big reason for much confusion on the part of many users is that the "Save As" does not work if the spreadsheet is detached. It will only allow you to save the chartbook as, not the spreadsheet.

I always detach my spreadsheets because I keep them on a separate monitor, but in so doing I lose the ability to Save As. Like the OP, this has caused my much headache many times. I now see that I can simply reattach the spreadsheet, Save As, then detach it again. And of course update the study to point to the new sheet as desired.

Perhaps it would help users if there was a File menu on the Spreadsheet detached window itself.
