32-bit Builds of Sierra Chart to be Discontinued with Newer Versions

We are continuing to work on the low level changes to support microsecond time stamping as explained here:
True Millisecond/Microsecond Time Stamping and ACSIL

When this happens, custom studies compiled before this version will have to be recompiled on that version or later.

Since all existing custom studies as of that version will no longer be compatible unless they are recompiled, we do not see a practical need to be offering the 32-bit version of Sierra Chart since the main reason is compatibility with 32-bit custom studies.

There will still be 32-bit versions available of Sierra Chart but as of the transition, the newer versions will be 64-bit only.

95% of our users are running a 64-bit Operating system.

Update:

Furthermore, the plan to discontinue the 32-bit version will also discontinue support for the "Use Excel" option in the Spreadsheet study. If you need to have a direct interface to Microsoft Excel, you will need to use a version of Sierra Chart prior to this. The built-in Sierra Chart spreadsheets will continue to be fully functional. Nothing will change in that regard. (We will hold off on removing Microsoft Excel support until 2020)

Update 2019-09-25:

We will not be building the 32-bit version of Sierra Chart effective after October 1 2019. You will continue to be able to use older 32-bit versions of Sierra Chart.

Will the '_64' naming convention continue for 64-bit custom studies?

How do I download the 64 bit version? When I download the current version it is a 32 bit version.

The 64-bit version is always installed . You will see a shortcut on your desktop for Sierra Chart that has "_64" in the text description below it. That will run the 64-bit version of Sierra Chart.

The Transact version off Sierra AT chart is still using 32-bit?
[2019-05-23 13:36:17]
Sierra Chart Engineering - Posts: 104368
Yes but that is because we want to maintain compatibility with custom studies which are more predominantly 32-bit. And there is an option in Global Settings >> General Settings >> General 4 to use the 64-bit version for Transact users.

But once we complete the work related to microsecond time stamping the version that Transact would use, would also be 64-bit.

What about a 64-bit installer as well?

For example, on FreeBSD, Wine 64-bit cannot be installed at the same time as Wine 32-bit. And it seems that in order to install SC, wine 32-bit is required, which means I'd have to continue using wine 32-bit to run SC 32-bit unless I uninstall wine 32-bit and re-install wine 64-bit. I'm guessing that would require uninstalling wine 64-bit and re-installing wine 32-bit every time there's an SC update.

Yes we will make the installer 64-bit. But for now the simple solution is just to use the zip installers. You will find a link to them here:

Will we have to make changes to our custom study codes, depending on the in-built studies we are using or specific re-implementations of variables, functions?

Sierra Chart Engineering - Posts: 104368
No changes are necessary to the source code. If you did already build/ compile a 64-bit version you just need to compile and that is all.

I have a number of 32 bit custom applications I would have to migrate. I currently use 64 bit as much as possible Sierra but migration will be costly.

You can still use an older version of Sierra Chart and if these 32-bit "custom applications" are separate programs why would there be a problem?

Definitely it is going to be much easier for nearly everyone for us to only support the 64-bit version. It is easier for us because there is only going to be one build of Sierra Chart in regards to architecture. It is going to be easier for custom study developers because rather than them building a 32-bit and 64-bit version, they just need to build a 64-bit version.

All the questions relating to 32-bit versus 64-bit will be eliminated.

We definitely are only going to be supporting the 64-bit version. And probably sooner rather than later.

No matter what the version is, there is a 32-bit executable and a 64-bit executable provided. They are both installed. Refer to:

This is the relevant message. You need to get the source code for that study and recompile it on the current version.
