Using same studies in multiple charts - advice for best practice

Hi, I am using the same studies (e.g. VWAP, horizontal lines for settlement price & RTH open, and some others) in multiple charts. I am wondering about the best practice here: (i) Is it better to create a central "data chart" that contains all these studies (I used a 1-minute intraday chart) and then use the study "Study/Price Overlay" to transfer these centrally defined & configued studies into all my other charts? (ii) Or is it better to individually create the same studies in every single chart I want to use them in? Option (i) has the advantage that I only need to configure everything once in my "data chart", and when I change a study setting there (e.g. line color) it is automatically applied to all other charts where I use this study via "Study/Price Overlay". However, option (ii) has the advantage that I need one chart less in my chartbook. Any insights/tipps into how to idealy handle this and how it is meant to be done in Sierra would be very much appreciated. |

It really depends on what you want to accomplish. If you are wanting to see the data, as it is for the one chart, on the other charts, then the Study/Price Overlay would be the way to go. If, on the other hand, you have studies that would give different results in different charts, then you would need to have the studies individually in each chart. If none of these apply then it comes down to which method has the higher calculation cost. VWAP has some calculation intensity, but items like Settlement Price, Open/Close do not. So you would need to look at the other studies and make your best estimate of whether you think having them individually on all charts is more calculation intensive than using the Overlay (there is not a good way to quantify this, so you just have to use your best guess). Also note that if you do have each study individually on all charts you would probably want to link the charts for the studies so changes to a study will reflect in all charts. Thanks for the quick reply John! That makes sense and already helps me with my decision making. Also thanks alot for pointing out the Linking options again. I already use it for the symbol but totally forgot that there are so many other linking options as well. That could be exactly what I was looking for. However, I cannot find an explanation on how exactly "Chart Linking >> Studies" works. The description of this option seems to be missing on the documentation page you referenced? Could you please quicky elaborate how exactly I can use this specific option? How does Sierra link the studies in the different charts? Probably not by the IDs of the studies (as they are assigned automatically and not changable if I'm not mistaken)? |

When you have the Studies linked, then all of the studies that are on one chart will be on the others. There is not a way to link each study separately. This way, if you remove a study, it is removed from all charts, and if you add a study it is added to all charts. If this is not what you need, then look into the Study Collections as another alternative.
