Question on Second Instance Chart Directory

Is there any way to make the second instance of Sierra (File-->New Instance) use the same data directory as the main instance? I don't want two copies of these enormous intraday data files eating up hard drive space.

Also, it's incredibly annoying to have to change the folder to the main data directory (C:\SierraCharts\Data) every time I want to open one of my chart files.

Basically, I don't want stuff stored in two places. I want ONE directory, which holds all of it, that's simple for me to back up nightly.

Thanks.

No this is definitely not supported.

Why. Files are read only, so it's not a mutual exclusion issue. Seems like basic functionality to me, especially when the files are multiple gigabytes in size.

It allows me to change the directory to whatever I want, so it's damn silly to not allow a default setting.

Fix this please.

The files are not read-only.

If you are changing the data folder to be the same as another instance (including the main instance) then what happens is that the market data in the file becomes twice what it should be. Each instance has to have its own set of files. This is an integral way that Sierra Chart works and is not going to change.

But we will be working on sub instances to be able to access market data direct from our servers for our own market data services, this would not include CQG, and not have to take it from the main instance. This will effectively accomplish what you want because as long as you are not looking at the symbol in the main instance, there will not be another copy of it. So you just need to make sure to look at Intraday charts for a particular symbol in only one instance.

There is a lack of understanding on your part of the architecture and why it is the way it is including the important advantages and of the severe complications and complexity of sharing a data file among multiple independent processes. Including ongoing issues, and extra support burden.

But nevertheless, we will work on this solution in the next month:

Storage is cheap these days. If that is not an option you should look into a filesystem that supports de-duplication. On Windows, this is currently available:
