During rollover, I have always renamed my ES?6.scid file to the new contract to save my previous data.
I was thinking, what exactly am I saving?. I assume all my chart notes that I put on the charts.
With this rollover my ESm6.scid file is 7,899,644KB.
So at almost 8gb's, pretty large.

Does this effect the performance a lot? (slow my charts down) Or is it just at startup? Then again with Microsoft's crappy OS10 I wonder how much memory it utilizes in the temporary areas and does it slow my computer down.

I also recall somewhere seeing that with large data, one should check (and I do) the CS>Advanced Settings>Split Data Records. I don't know if that applies to this question.

So, bottom line does that large data in my ES file slow down charts? computation? startup? all?

And if so, Could I then just rename it (since I rarily go back that far) and then just have the current or current and last contract loaded?
Thx

The scid file contains the downloaded data - that's all.

The cht file contains your annotations on the chart.

Scid file size just uses a bit of memory; and doesnt impact responsiveness. Thats more likely to be affected by the number of days you load on your chart ... in fact that impacts memory too so SC must be clever enough to only load what it needs from the scid file.

I've got plenty of 20M scid files so I'm not sure that 7 is really large. Unless you know you have a problem (and you've tuned days loaded) I wouldn't worry. But yes you can rename files if you want to stop collecting that data at a certain point.

The Intraday data file only contains the chart bar data.

Nothing else.

You should not be renaming data files any longer. Instead use the Continuous Futures Contract Feature:

https://www.sierrachart.com/index.php?page=doc/doc_ContinuousFuturesContractCharts.html

And once you start using this feature, re-download data for all contract months following the instructions here:
