Volume by Price Study - auto bar width request

I find Volume by Price to be a very useful study whilst trend trading on relatively fast moving tick charts. To get the most from the study I need to be able to view the shape of the whole profile. This necessitates making frequent changes to the "Maximum Volume Bar Width Type" setting. At present this has 2 alternatives "Period Length" and "Window Width". I request you look at the possibility of adding a 3rd option "Automatic". This would generate the actions: Bar Width Type = Period Length; If(Period Length > Window Width) Bar Width Type = Window Width; Hopefully implementation of this request will also be of benefit to other SC users. That is great news. I find still myself oscillating between Period Length and Window Width as the day evolves on my trading charts. Having a setting that stops a profile going than 50% window width would be a big step forward. Thanks. |

We have added a new option "Include Fill Space In Developing Period Width" which may address your needs. When option is set, the chart fill space is included into the period width of a developing period, allowing more space for a developing period to be displayed.

I am trading from tick charts with bar fill times ranging from 45s to 5 min to give a bar range of at least 10t. The Volume by Price Study is set to cover the period from a significant high or low to the end of the chart with Bar Width Type = Period Length. As bars build in the chart the start point for the profile may still be relevant as it scrolls past the left border of the chart and the shape of the profile becomes increasingly less apparent unless Bar Width Type is changed to Window Width via Study Settings. Within the study you already have picked up Period Length and Window Width so I was hoping it would be possible to bring in the option switch automatically to Window Width when Period Length becomes greater than Window Width. The other way of achieving my objective would be to decrease Maximum Volume Bar Width Percentage (currently set to 50) as Period Length becomes greater than the width of the chart. Clearly it only takes a few seconds to make the Bar Width Type change manually, but I monitor 38 commodities and am on a mission to automate as much as possible. Volume by Price is an excellent study and I understand why you have not published the source code. Please consider my suggestion and, when time permits, bring in the option to switch automatically from Period Length to Window Width. Many thanks |

In the next version, we have added the Automatic option to the "Maximum Volume Bar Width Type". It will select the period width until it exceeds the window width, at which point it will use the window width.

Definitely +1 on this! There's been a long-standing issue with VbP and window width vs time period and am glad to see it come to light.
