Correct usage of background coloring for Numbers Bars study

I have a Numbers Bars study in my chart to create a footprint that especially shows / hightlights the bid and ask imbalances. (see screenshot 1) I want to simplify that study by replacing the numbers with simple colored bars. To achieve that, I set the column 1 background coloring method to "Based on Diagonal Dominant Side AskVol BidVol Percentage" - which is exactly the same setting that I used for the text coloring method. (see screenshot 2) Unfortunately, the resulting studies look different (e.g., not the same rows are colored in both studies) and I don't understand why. (see screenshot 3) I assume the coloring setting somehow works differently for text and background, but I don't know exactly how. Could you please let me know what I'm missing here? Thanks! |

Hi John, thank you, that's much appreciated! Please find the cleaned-up chartbook attached to this message. It contains only two charts: Chart #1 with the original footprint that shows the colored texts for the bid/ask imbalances. Chart #2 which is basically just a clone of Chart #1. I only changed two things here in the Numbers Bars study: (i) Set the column 1 text to "No Text" and (ii) Set the column 1 background coloring method from "None - Transparent" to "Based on Diagonal Dominant Side AskVol BidVol Percentage". Since the selected coloring method in Chart #2 is the same for text coloring and background coloring I assumed to see red/green colored bars at the exactly same positions where the imbalances are (red/green colored texts). It's very close, but not exactly identical which I don't understand. I assume I'm overlooking something here. |

The main problem is that when you change from coloring the Text to coloring the Background, you need to change the Up/Down coloring for Ranges 0, 1, and 2 to be the same as your background. Since you left this as white, from how the text is colored, you are seeing all the white items for ratios that are less than 400%. There is also one other item that you will find. There is a difference in how the Numbers Bars deals with comparison to zero values between the text and the background. So for instance, in one bar we see the following values: 18 x 14 7 x 0 9 x 8 For the text coloring, the Bid of 9 at the lowest level we show will get colored. For the Background coloring, this will not be colored unless you set the Input for "Enable Diagonal Zero Bid/Ask Compares". Refer to the following: https://www.sierrachart.com/index.php?page=doc/NumbersBars.php#Input_EnableDiagonalZeroBidAskCompares By chance, we are working on bringing these items into alignment and giving additional options for how comparisons with zero are made. But this is a lower priority and is being worked on slowly. We hope in a few weeks we will have it out, but we can not make any promises. Hi John, sorry for reviving this topic, but I would kindly request your assistance again. I'm probably sill missing something because I configured the study as you explained above - and it looks pretty good already - but there are still some mismatches that I am unable to explain. I marked them with white arrows in the attached screenshots. It seems to come from the "Enable Diagonal Zero Bid/Ask Compares" option. The only thing that I don't understand: there are no zeros at these locations as you can see on the screenshots, so I have no clue why these cells are colored. Any help with this would greatly be appreciated. |

The option for "Enable Diagonal Zero Bid/Ask Compares" considers the values above the high and below the low as zero values when this is enabled. That is why you are seeing this. The change we are working on will have separate options for comparisons to be done at the high/low versus comparisons with actual zero values within the bars. But, the process is going slow on this development, so we can not say when we will get it done. Hopefully in a month or so. Thanks a lot for the fast response and the clarification! It seems I didn't fully understand that option. Everything is clear now - and I look forward to that update you mentioned :)

Version 2683 is the current Pre-Release and it has the updates to the Numbers Bars for two different Inputs to control whether diagonal comparisons are done at the high and low, and whether comparisons are done with zero values as ones. This also brings the coloring of the background and the numbers into alignment.
