Spreadsheet trading system, when not using a traditional indicator

I have a variable (Variable_X) that is not calculated for every bar in a chart. It changes constantly based on data from the Depth of Market study.

If Variable_X is greater than Parameter_Y, I want to buy.

All of the excellent spreadsheet trading help documentation that I have found are based on using a variable calculated for every bar, such as a Moving Average indicator.

How do I stipulate a buy trigger if my Variable_X > Parameter_Y

In general, it doesn't matter that the variable is not changing per bar, but since you are then using the Spreadsheet you need to have that data available in a Subgraph so it is available in the Spreadsheet System for Trading. This means there will be data for every bar, but from what you state, it will just not be changing.

Thank you.

"but since you are then using the Spreadsheet you need to have that data available in a Subgraph so it is available in the Spreadsheet System for Trading"

I think this is where I have deviated from the Spreadsheet for Trading study's intended use. I am calculating my variable inside the spreadsheet, using various subgraphs from an existing study. My variable in not available as a subgraph, and nor do I think it can be calculated using the various Arithmetic Studies.

How do I trade of a variable calculated in the spreadsheet, where that variable only occupies one cell (it isn't calculated for every bar)

Unless we are missing something, the answer is that you just reference that cell as you would with any spreadsheet. In this case, you probably want to use an absolute reference, so when the formula columns copy down, you are using just that one cell - for instance, you would enter a reference to that cell using the '$' before the column and before the row - such as $AZ$17 (if the cell were at AZ17).

I have worked it out.

But I am having amazing problems with the spreadsheet for trading study.

I created numerous formulas between Col O to Col Z. All was well. Then suddenly they just vanished. Gone - those columns are now blank except for the labels. I closed without saving and reopened the chartbook, but they are gone.

It happened in both my original chartbook and my copy - both were open at the same time and contained the same chart with spreadsheet study attached and same custom work. Both instances of the spreadsheet was cleared of all custom columns.

It all happened some time after I created a "Buy Entry" rule in Col K and put a static parameter values into cell K1.

I have to start again from zero.

I rebuilt the spreadsheet again. Saved. Closed SC and "Saved All". Reopened SC and once again my spreadsheet is blank of all custom work EXCEPT the static parameter value in cell K1.

Why is this happening to me?

I have attached two images: one is with all my custom work. The other is after all my work had been cleared, note all that remains is "21" in cell K1

We see you are missing columns A through J. You can not delete those columns in the Spreadsheet Studies. If you do not want to see them, the best you can do is to shrink their size down as small as you can get them. You do need to start over without deleting the columns.

They are not missing, the spreadsheet is just scrolled across to where my custom content began

I totally deleted the existing Spread for trading study (.SCSS file) and started again. So far no issues.

One thing I noted in the troubles spreadsheet study:

1. After building the sheet, I changed the bar duration of the chart containing the study from 60m to 1m
2. I noted that the spreadsheet now had three sheets. One blank, one referencing a 60m chart that didn't exist, and a third sheet referencing the 1m chart.

Refer to the Spreadsheet Study Inputs related to referencing a particular sheet and make sure those are all set as you would expect :

You can delete the sheets that you do not need:

Why is this happening to me?
You must only edit the Sheet# that matches the 'Formula Source Sheet Number/Name' setting.
If you edit a sheet that is different than that setting, all formulas will disappear at the next chart update.
This setting is critical for proper function, and it is the first place to look when things disappear.

The purpose of this setting is to allow the same algo to be applied to all sheets/charts.
But if you want separate algos for each chart, this setting must match its chart#.

I noted that the spreadsheet now had three sheets.
A sheet is added each time the same-named spreadsheet study is added to a chart.
It will have a Sheet# that matches the chart#, but will not necessarily match the 'Formula Source Sheet Number' setting.

You can manually delete sheets that are no longer associated with an added spreadsheet study, but they are not automatically removed when the study is removed.

Thank you, Sawtooth. That was educational. Thank you. It now leads me into managing multiple algos.

I have a long history of system trading on daily bars. SC spreadsheet based algo trading is and exciting new world.
