I have 4 monitors. I want to be able to open a separate chartbook on each monitor. The one way I have seen is to operate with a single chartbook and then detach charts and move them to the other monitors. This is unacceptable as I need to organize my charts using separate chartbooks.

The other way I've seen is to create separate instances and have a different instance running on each monitor. This is almost acceptable except it requires me to operate using 4 different data folders due to the fact that sub instances default to their own data folder and this cannot be changed.

An example a problem this creates is if one selects a chartbook from the default folder to open by automatically within instance #2 this fails because instance #2 looks for that chart in instance #2's data folder and not the default.

This seems to be a rudimentary problem so I'm sure there is a simple solution to opening multiple chartbooks on multiple monitors.

There is a solution by using sub instances and the Chartbook's belonging to each sub instance needs to be within each sub instance Data folder. All of this happens by default.

My question remains.

When I open a "New Instance" it appears to copy the existing chartbooks from the Primary instance into the data folder for the Sub instance. This creates duplicate copies of the same chart.

1) What mechanism exists for reconciling changes between the multiple versions of the same chart?
2) Charts from the Primary instance get copied to the new instance upon creation? But new charts created after the instance creation do not? What mechanism exists for ensuring that each instance has the same charts and the same version of each chart?

Even with multiple data feeds one would expect to use the same charts so having different version of the same charts isolated to an instance does not seem a proper solution.

What are mechanisms to ensure the user is working on the appropriate version of a chart and in the appropriate instance?

Each instance of Sierra Chart contains its own data folder, so each instance is independent of the other ones with respect to the Data folder. Therefore, each instance has its own chartbooks, and these are not seen by the other instances.

question related to the above

when i am running multiple instances, instance #2, #3 actually inherited the 'recent file list' from the main instance

so when i open a charbook in instance #2 using the inherited 'recent file list', it's actually opening the bbb.cht from the main instance folder

i found out by accident because when i was saving instance #2 bbb.cht, i saw the bbb.cht in the main folder updating but NOT the instance #2 folder bbb.cht

is there anything wrong with using instance #2 but opening a bbb.cht from the main folder (the main instance of sc is using aaa.cht only, never bbb.cht)?

thank you

We have verified that this is definitely not correct:
when i am running multiple instances, instance #2, #3 actually inherited the 'recent file list' from the main instance

And we have never had a reported instance of this problem.

This list is cleared, on a new sub instance being created. It is more likely, that you manually copied over the main configuration file from the main instance to a sub instance.

is there anything wrong with using instance #2 but opening a bbb.cht from the main folder (the main instance of sc is using aaa.cht only, never bbb.cht)?
Yes definitely do not do this. It will lead to conflicts.

It is more likely, that you manually copied over the main configuration file from the main instance to a sub instance.

you are correct, whenever i update the tools configs, i manually copy the config files to the sub-instances

been doing that for a while, not sure why this is happening now

anyway, will instead just delete the config files & keyboard shortcut files in the sub-instances when updating and let sierra populate it from the main folder

thank you
