I have Sierra charts on my desktop (which I trade from) and on my laptop which I use as a backup in case of a problem with my desktop. I would like to be able to only make changes on one machine and copy those to the other rather than having to make the changes on both machines. With another platform I use I can do a backup to a thumb drive (on the desktop, for example) and then do a restore to the laptop. This moves any changes I make on the desktop, i.e. changes to the charts, quoteboard, etc. to the laptop quickly and accurately.

Can I do something like this with Sierra?

Thanks.

Thank you.

This is a lot of work compared to what I have to do on the other platform. There I hit the archive button and browse to where I want to back it up to (the thumb drive). After it copies I pull the thumb drive out and put it in the other machine and hit the Backup button and wait 45 seconds or so while it copies the files and I'm done.

You ought to look into making this a little simplier.

Really what Sierra Chart offers is quite straightforward and simple.

You just need to copy the Chartbooks from the Data Files Folder from one installation to the other and also the Sierra3.CFG file in the root folder of the Sierra Chart installation folder.

Step 5 of the link you sent me indicates 9 files other than the Chartbooks file you mentioned. Are you telling me I don't need to copy the other 8 files listed in step 5?

I just started looking for a "chartbooks" file/folder in the Data folder. I could not find one. I did find a chartbooks file for EACH of my many chartbooks. Yes, this is doable but it's a lot more effort like I previously stated. It appears I have to search for every chart that I change (up to 16 charts) in addition to the other files you mentioned every time I make a change.

I'll suggest it again, you should look into making this a little more efficient. It's certainly possible as the other platform has done it. Move ONE folder and you're done.

You do not need to copy any other files we did not mentioned in this thread, unless you need them.

Chartbooks have a CHT file extension. Just remove the Chartbooks that you no longer use and then you will have only the remaining ones to copy.

It is also possible for the user to make it more efficient just by writing a simple batch/script file to copy the files. The way that Sierra Chart handles this, is actually more user-friendly, stable and organized because there are just simple files that can be copied each with a specific purpose and where the files do not have a dependency upon each other.

The problem with making this too easy, is that the user has no sense of what is going on at a lower level. What happens is when something goes wrong or there is some more specialized need, the user then has to go through greater effort to resolve the problem. Since working with files is very easy and can be automated by the use of scripts, we do provide a very good foundation for you to perform the operation that you need.

Unfortunately, I don't know how to write a batch/script file. Are there instructions here or do I need to search the web to learn how to do this?
