First of all, be aware that you can also change the chart symbol through the keyboard. Refer to the following: Changing the Symbol of a Chart: Quickly Changing the Symbol of a Chart to a Symbol for which a Data File Exists As such, it is possible that you had other keystrokes in the queue, or that whatever got typed got associated with the symbol change rather than the time period change. This is why it's a good idea to hit the ESC key prior to entering the keyboard commands to ensure that the queue is empty prior to typing.
