It sounds like you are looking at an Intraday chart, for which, apparently you are able to get the data back to 1990.

The .dly files are the Daily files, so if you change to a daily (or higher timeframe) chart, then that is the historical data and it sounds like you can get back to 1974 with that.

Officially, the CME data only goes back to 2008. But there can be individual symbols that have additional data, such as Gold that you have seen. Refer to the following for the official version of how far back data is available:
