The only solution for what you are doing is to set the scaling to be Automatic. Refer to the following: Chart Scale and Scale Adjusting: Automatic (Scale Range) The problem you are seeing is that you have the scale set to a "Constant Range", so when you change the symbol, that range is no longer valid to cover the range for the new symbol.
