We will make sure that formulas do not get lost as long as you have saved them. We are not quite sure of the scenario that leads to this though that you are encountering. We will make the saving of Spreadsheet files fault-tolerant so if something goes wrong, the original file will still be intact. 40,000 rows should not be too many.
