I have a relatively new laptop which unfortunately only has 1 hard drive (which now is starting to fill up - although Sierra itself is only at 30 GB)

So far, I have only been trading 1 instrument (ES) but would like to add a few more.

I was thinking of getting a (portable) external SSD and I wanted to get your take on this. In particular, 2 options that I would like to share. Not sure what the policy is around products, so I will just describe the specs and not link to a brand or product

- 2TB drive USB 3.1 Gen2, 1000 MB/s Transfer speeds
- 2TB drive USB 3.2 Gen 2x2 , 1500 MB/s Transfer Speeds
- 1TB drive ThunderboltTM 3 mode has transfer speeds of up to 2700 MBps
- I do have a thunderbolt 4 port (which I now use to connect a hub - especially when travelling - but this hub only supports speeds up to 1000MB/s. But also seems thunderbolt 4 SSDs are still very very expensive.

I ran a benchmark test on my laptop and the speeds I get from my internal drive range from 4130MB/s (large files) to 16MB/s (small files)

Do you have any recommendations for me with regards such an external solution? Is this sufficiently fast? In particular would 1000MB/s be fast enough?

just a quick comment... if your internal drive is not a newer generation nvme SSD, I would highly recommend getting a new laptop. It made a huge difference for me with superfast ssd when I upgraded mine in late 2022.

The internal drive I have is a M.2 NVMe PCI 4.0 SSD. It is plenty fast (just small) and since I read that sierra recommends installing it onto a separate disk alltogether, I only have the option to use a usb or thunderbolt drive.

Do you know what kind of drive you had before? And what the speeds were? That might give me a benchmark.

I would upgrade the internal drive. You can get 1 TB upgrades for less than $100.

I had a regular HDD. My ssd is 500gb and went with smaller size as I read somewhere bigger capacity ssd comes with slower performance. I would still suggest upgrading internal drive instead of running SC off USB port. It’s good only if you travel a lot (or for routine backups which is what I use for). 500gb is plenty so you might have a lot of garbage from sim trade logs, message logs etc piling up that require some housekeeping. Also scid files keeps growing in size over time so take a look at all those things as well.
