What do you like/not like about running SC and/or IBKR's TWS in the Cloud? Any gotchas you ran into? Are you able to use multiple monitors using Microsoft's RDC without tearing your hair out due to lousy performance? (I use eight 2560x1440 monitors at home). Did you have any concerns about putting sensitive information into the Cloud? I am concerned that I am putting my trades at risk with my home setup. A power and/or internet outage would screw up client side orders as I prefer that SC handle such things. It just doesn't seem worth the risk to my wallet not to use a rock solid 24/7 data center. Upgrading my home network with failover Internet and UPSs everywhere seems silly. Thanks for your thoughts, advice, suggestions. Ed |

Hey Ed, By cloud, you mean running SC/TWS on a VPS server in a cloud-managed environment and accessing it via remote desktop right? I have tried this option and RDC is good only for algo traders to monitor the platform and do basic housekeeping. I could not stare at the RD client app on my iphone or desktop continuously. Definitely a problem with multiple monitors as well. I also felt network latency was unbearable. Regarding data security and privacy, my take is to go with a dedicated server or bare metals server which gives you full and complete root-level access to the entire server with no resource sharing. A little pricy but depending on your needs, it is quite worthwhile imo. Regarding network failover, I have my primary comcast cable high speed internet. I also use T-mobile hotspot as an backup alternative which serves as a replacement for UPS as I can just hop in the car and wifi via hotspot. I also have a A/C inverter unit which let's me use as a backup power for small appliances. Possibilities are endless but ultimately, it sucks to be stuck with a desktop-only trading platform. SC's web panel is there but quite rudimentary and serves the purpose for now as I am 90%+ an algo trader so no complaints. Regarding your issues with TWS>SC connectivity, I have been with IBKR active and passively for over a decade and TWS has challenges with all system integrators and their charting capabilities is just horrible but their mobile app is robust and meets most of my trading needs. Personally, I moved away from IBKR as I am not a huge fan of brokers providing their own trading platform and order routing. There needs to be complete independence and segregation with no room for conflict of interest between platform provider and your brokerage/clearing house. I am just skeptic by nature and this is primary reason why I chose SC few yrs back. I also do not like software vendors forcing frequent software updates. SC does a pretty good job at this with freedom to stay on whatever version I want and without any "automatic updates" like most cloud-based trading platform providers do. I will most likely stay with Sierra Chart forever as long as 1) Sierra Chart does not move into brokerage/clearing agent business 2) provide their software as white label to introducing brokers to tweak and do monkey business at the back-end like metatrader does with their broker-plugins. Hope this helps. |
