Backups when the app crashes

Is there a way to recover changes to a spreadsheet when the app crashes? Three times in the last two days I've been doing extensive work on a spreadsheet, then go to replay backtest it and the app locks up (not responding). It's only using 200 rows when this happens and limited studies (previous backtests performed perfectly).

My main question is whether it has a temp file of the spreadsheet saved somewhere that I can recover. Is that possible?

Every time you save a spreadsheet a backup is also saved. Working with Spreadsheets: Accessing a Backup Spreadsheet File

If you change any of the formulas in the spreadsheet you can save it before testing it by selecting the spreadsheet window and doing File>>Save. If Sierra crashes, your changes to the formulas and other cell values (e.g. Col. H) are saved.

Thanks Bradh. Per my original question, I'm wondering if there's a way to recover spreadsheets when one HASN'T yet saved and it crashes.

I'm also quote curious as to why it saves a backup when you save, instead of saving a backup before you save which is how Office software and most business applications work these days to address the very problem I'm identifying. I wonder what the use case is for saving a backup of an already saved file that just gets overridden when it's saved again.

I don't think Sierra supports backing up unsaved worksheets. MS Office didn't always do that, maybe we will see that one day with Sierra Chart.

The backups do not get overwritten. They are numbered.

Thanks again. You're saying the backups are actually versions?

I attempted to use the backup system today. Perhaps I'm doing it wrong.

I opened a chartbook, went to Studies, then to the spreadsheet I needed to restore, then next to Spreadsheet Name I clicked Select and used the dialog box to find a backup of the spreadsheet in the Backups folder. When I reviewed the spreadsheet contents I found it to be empty: no formulae, no colors, no extra sheets. Is there a better way to restore the file or is the backup system meant to be used another way?

I think the spreadsheet file was saved (and backed up) without formulas, if you are not seeing any. You can test saving a spreadsheet with a formula in column K, and then opening the backup from the backups folder. The formula should still be there in column K.
