When I upgrade to the 64 bit platform do I need to completely uninstall the 32 bit software?

No, this is not true at all. You just simply run the 64-bit version using the shortcut on your desktop that has 64 in it. There is nothing to uninstall and there is nothing to install. The 64-bit version has existed for all users for years now.
