Sierra Chart crashing with Renko chart open

Hello Support,

I have had this problem for a while but lately it became substantially more exacerbated. SC is crashing if I am working with Renko charts. Initially I thought this may be caused by an extensive calculation necessary for the Renko format so I have cut down the number of days loaded to only 10 days (even though this substantial impacts my ability to do analyses on a longer period of time). This did not help. If I have Renko chart for NQ (or any other futures market) open in a higher format the platform is more or less stable. However, if I try to zoom in into a lower time frame on the same chart - Sierra Charts crashes and shuts down.

Example: NQ Renko chart of 8 ticks is more or less stable (almost never crashes) but switching down to 4 ticks Renko on the same chart almost immediately shuts the platform down.

I am attaching an image of my Renko chart configuration. Quick note: I am projecting the drawings on this Renko chart from another chart with a higher time frame but I don't think this is what 's causing a problem. Other charts with the same drawings projected are NOT crashing the platform. It is ONLY happening when I try to manipulate the setting of the Renko chart, specifically zooming in to a smaller timeframe or adding substantially larger number of days to load

This is not a corrupt chart or a chart book because I have tested extensively by opening a brand new chart book and a single new Renko chart. After one or 2 clicks or manipulations with Renko chart the platform still crashes.

I am running Sierra Chart version 1928 64-Bit on Win-10 Professional 64-Bit. The server is quite capable of handling any workload so I seriously doubt this is a resource limitation:

Processor - Intel(R) 64-Bit Core(TM) i7 CPU 950 @ 3.07GHz - 3.83 GHz
Installed RAM - 24GB

Any suggestion on what could be the root cause of these crashes?

This would seem doubtful the problem is caused just by the Renko bars. Very doubtful. There never has been any known instance of this and technically it is very very unlikely.

We want you to run Sierra Chart in Safe Mode:

And see if that resolves the issue.

Hello Support,

It appears that you are 100% correct in your assessment. Running SC in the Safe mode prevented unexpected platform shutdown while manipulating the Renko chart settings. I have successfully loaded an extensive amount of days (more than 2 years) and was able to manipulate the setting with platform responding very adequately. In fact, the response time and the speed of the chart has increased substantially.

The problem I am experiencing must be caused by one of the several custom studies that I have on this chart. I would like to isolate the problem further and identify the study that actually causing this. These are a paid for tools developed by a reputable vendor and I would need to show them proof that one of their tools causing this.

Could you recommend the best way of narrowing down the indicator / Study that's causing SC to crash?

You just need to test the studies one by one when not using Safe Mode.

I was thinking about the same approach. Will hiding the study from being displayed on the chart be sufficient for preventing its interaction with SC platform or will I need to entirely remove the study from the chart in order to completely disable it?

You actually need to remove it from all open charts. And then restart Sierra Chart. Both need to be done to remove it as a possibility of causing a problem.

This is a very helpful documentation page, thank you!

One suggestion I would make is that you should probably add a note to the listed steps of troubleshooting informing users that the Automatic file Download needs to be disabled from the Account Control Page. If it's not disabled, the copied of all .DLL files will be downloaded again on the restart of Sierra Charts. Hence, all custom studies will get loaded again and cause the same problem. After the troubleshooting is done and the .dll file causing an error is identified the automatic file download on restart can be enabled again.
