You have selected an option that is waiting for you to select a drawing to do something to it. For example, if you selected "Tools >> Move Drawing" then each drawing will have a number displayed allowing you to select it to then move it. Refer to the following: Chart Drawing Tools: Adjust Drawing - Menu and Control Bar Button Method To get "out" of this mode without actually selecting anything, select a drawing tool (such as Pointer).
