DTC Sub Instance No Historical Data Client

I use File > New Instance routinely and noticed that the sub instances were not downloading historical data when I went to roll over the Equity Indexes this weekend. I received a mostly blank chart with just live data filling in as time went by.

I scrolled through the log and noticed this line:
No historical data client is currently set to download historical Intraday data for ESU23. | 2023-06-11 20:44:00.694

It appears for any symbols that I have tried (NQU23, MNQU23, MESU23, GCQ23, CLN23 etc.).

The "Main" instance (where I select File > New Instance) is downloading data properly (historical and live), but the Sub Instances are only receiving Live.

I can submit the entire log via Send For Analysis if needed.

I searched for similar issues and only found one topic which was a problem caused by a broker version of SC instead of a Direct Sierra Chart Account. I have a Direct Sierra Chart Account with Package 10 and activated live CME Exchanges via Teton/Denali.

In the sub instance:

Follow the instructions here to clear the Message Log:
Message Log: Clearing the Message Log

Fully re-download the data in the chart by going to the chart and selecting "Edit >>Delete All Data and Download".

Or, in the case of a Continuous Futures Contract chart, follow these instructions:
Continuous Futures Contract Charts: Re-Downloading Continuous Futures Contract Data

After about a minute provide a copy of the Message Log following these instructions:
Support Board Posting Information: How to Post Your Message Log (Required In Some Cases)

We will then determine what the problem is.

Please find attached the log after following your steps. This Instance has Custom Symbol Settings (mainly commissions), but it also was happening on an Instance without Custom Symbol Settings.

In newer versions of Sierra Chart, a sub instance is not able to download data until there is a connection to the main instance. This is by design because it is not known how to route historical data requests without a connection to the main instance.

You need to first connect with File >> Connect to Data Feed before any downloads can proceed.

Yes, that makes sense.

I'm not sure how to show it via Message Logs, but every SC link in the chain is connected to the data feed. The Trading Evaluator instance, the Main SC instance, and the two problematic File > New Instance Sub Instances all have Green Status Bars and are loading live data. The two regular instances are loading Historical Data successfully, but the two File > New Instance Sub Instances are failing with that message.

Do this in the sub instance:

Follow the instructions here to update the Symbol Settings:
Global Symbol Settings: Update Global Symbol Settings

Make sure you also disable Use Custom Symbol Settings Values
----

Follow the instructions here to clear the Message Log:
Message Log: Clearing the Message Log

Close all of the Chartbooks with "File >> Close All Chartbooks".

Open a single chart for the symbol you have an issue with through "File >> Find Symbol". Tell us that symbol of the chart. Tell us about *one* symbol only.

Disconnect from the data feed with "File >> Disconnect".

Connect to the data feed with "File >> Connect to Data Feed".

After the connection and after about 10 seconds, provide a copy of the Message Log following these instructions:

I have done additional debugging and found a work around that may help with your debugging process. Unfortunately, it is only a work around instead of a full solution since I have to do it each time I exit the File > New Instance Sub Instances since they revert to the non-working settings on each new start up. This decreases the utility of File > New Instance for creating disposable Sub Instances for testing.

All of the SC instances below are on the same computer and use 127.0.0.1 as the DTC Server address.

My main connection to the Denali feed is through my “Trading Evaluator [trading]” connection and that instance of SC is used solely for live trading. It has a DTC Protocol Server configured on ports 11097 and 11096 (historical).
I then have a separate installation of SC which I use for everything else so that any errors I make do not interfere with the live trading instance. This installation is manually configured as “DTC - Sub Instance [trading]” and manually set to the DTC ports from the Trading Evaluator DTC Server (11097 / 11096).
Both of the above instances are working correctly for both Live and Historical Data.

I then use File > New Instance in the “everything else” installation for my two File > New Instance Sub Instances. Neither of these two File > New Instance Sub Instances can receive Historical Data as of the latest update. I was on approximately version 2392 (it was earlier than 2400, but not too far before 2400) before updating last week to 2509, and historical data was working properly before the update with this set up.
Selecting File > New Instance also automatically starts a DTC Server from the “everything else” installation which is set to listen on ports 11099 and 11098 (historical).
The Sub Instances created via File > New Instance default to ports 11099 and 11098 (the ports from the “everything else” DTC Server which created them). When running this way, I receive the “No historical data client is currently set to download historical Intraday data for Symbol” error.

However, if I manually change the File > New Instance Sub Instances to connect directly to the “Trading Evaluator” DTC Server on ports 11097 and 11096 (instead of their default 11099/11098) by going to Data/Trade Service Settings, it forces a reload of the Symbol List and then works for historical data. By that I mean if I go to Find Symbol after changing to ports 11097/11096 then the Find Symbol window is blank for a few moments and then populates with the symbols. Historical data will then load properly in the Sub Instance if I delete/download data.

Unfortunately, when the Sub Instances close and then are opened later using File > New Instance, they revert back to the default 11099/11098 ports and historical data fails again.

Hopefully this helps you narrow down where the issue is. Alternatively, if the Sub Instances can be set to preserve the changed ports, that would also fix it, although that appears to be more of a band-aid solution. It may also be that there is some way to set the “historical data client” in the Sub Instance to work using the default DTC Server ports.

We do not need all of this. We know exactly what the problem is. There is no need for all of this posting or any further information. We will have it resolved by the end of the day.

But basically the solution for now is do not open any Chartbooks until there is a connection to the data feed and symbol settings have been updated.

We had a similar issue, SC suspected intraday file update list, for whatever reason it did seem to go away after removing intraday file update lists, but in the past with other setups we have not had issues with intraday file update lists: Apex Rithmic/Denali Auto Backfill Data into Sub Instance

I have updated to v2510 and the problem still exists. Same symptoms as before with no Historical Data in the File > New Instance Sub Instances with this line: "No historical data client is currently set to download historical Intraday data for ESU23. | 2023-06-14 10:00:31.515"

I will provide logs if you request them.

You can still see that line, that is not necessarily unusual. The question is whether the data is actually failing to download. Since the download will occur when it is able to.

Can we call and do a remote assistance session with you to look at this if you still have a problem.

I tried on a new symbol since there was data in the ESU23.scid file just from running SC (live data was being saved), and that new symbol (6AM23) opens to a blank chart. I left it running a few minutes and no historical data loaded, although live data was creating a bar every minute. There is not a "Waiting to Download Historical Data" yellow box nor a "Downloading Historical Data. Bars may not appear until done." blue box on the mostly blank chart. I am not sure how else to check if it is just taking a long time to download.

Yes, let us please have a remote assistance session.
