I have Denali and put in the symbol $VIX but nothing is showing up on the chart. Do I have to pay more for this symbol?

Yes, the CBOE requires that you pay in order to get any data. The $VIX is part of the CBOE Indices that is part of our Sierra Chart Exchange Data Feed.
