Running SC from an external SSD?

My laptop has small storage capacity. 29 GB and 1 gb free at best.

When opening some charts for the first time, I noticed the message log said the connection was closed and that there wasn't enough space on the disk.

Is it possible to run SC straight from an External SSD like this one?

How much read and write speed would be needed for this?

Yes, technically you could do that but the speed limitation over the USB port would be a concern.

It is not a very expensive device, so you can get it and give it a try.

You definitely would want speeds which would be comparable, to an SSD using a SATA port. Although you would never be able to match the speeds of an NVME drive. And that's what you would want to be using.

Would be best to try to update the solid-state drive in the laptop to a much bigger one.

Thank you for your reply. Are there external Nvme SSDs?

Seems there are models like this one with 1000 mbps read and write speeds.

Do you think its worth giving it a try?

Yes you can give it a try but to take advantage of that speed your laptop would need this type of USB port:
USB 3.2 Gen 2

Great catch. I'm not sure if my laptop has that. Maybe there is an adapter. I will check it out, as well as some other models.

Update:

This one says "Get NVMe solid state performance..."

Would you recommend this one?

It is completely dependent on the speed of the USB port. If it is an older laptop the performance we would expect not to be as good.

I appreciate the info. Better than spending just hoping something works. I'd be open to new laptop recommendations too. This is my current model. Its a 2016. I'm not sure about the port speed. Can you tell from this link?

This does not support the USB 3.2 Gen 2 standard.
