[Programming Help] - Renaming Custom Study in SC spreadsheet

tldr: rename custom spreadsheet/study and automagically have all the charts using it reflect the change, if that's possible.

When originally testing SC, I created a custom study using an SC spreadsheet and when asked to save it, I just either selected the name offered or called it DefaultSpreadsheetStudy.scss (i was just testing so figured I'd have to redo everything later on.) I ended up using this as a custom study plotted in Region 2 of many charts in many chartbooks; and am stuck with it now.

How can I rename this custom study or spreadsheet without negatively impacting all of the individual charts due to name change? IOW, ideally, renaming this spreadsheet/study to something more significant WITHOUT impacting the charts already created which are using this study (i.e. avoid losing the plots in Region 2 and having to manually update each with new name.)

Thanks.

If you are using the same spreadsheet in multiple charts, then you would have to change the name in each of the charts that uses that spreadsheet. There is not a way around this.

But, that is all you would need to do, is to change the name on the Spreadsheet Study Settings for the Spreadsheet Name, and do that on each chart that uses it.

If you are using that spreadsheet in a Study Collection then you would also need to update the Study Collection with the new Spreadsheet Study.

If you just change the name, your settings will be reset to default, and your formulas will vanish.

If you are using the same-named spreadsheet on multiple charts in the same chartbook, this is what I do to rename a spreadsheet file:

This method keeps all of your settings, and formulas.

Then go to each chart and use the Select button next to the Spreadsheet Name field to use the newly named spreadsheet file.

It is generally not a good idea to share spreadsheets between charts that are open at the same time. The data ends up getting overwritten as each chart gets its turn to use the study. This can slow things down if there are many rows and columns that are changing.

@bradh

Funny you mentioned it -- I did notice it and was wondering about it.
So what do you suggest? Duplicate the spreadsheet, one per chart? That would be a LOT of spreadsheets....

To duplicate them, for each chart, open the Spreadsheet study settings, and type a new name in the Spreadsheet Name Box. Click OK and say no to saving the old name. Save the Chartbook when all the charts in the chartbook have been modified.

It is up to you if you want to do this. If you are OK with the performance then don't bother. They will still work, just more slowly than they could.

Or you can replace the spreadsheet study with a custom ACSIL study that will not only improve the performance of each copy of the study, but you can also have as many copies of the study with the same name and they will operate totally independently. Direct message me if you would like a quote for this.

I am now in need of creating this custom ACSIL study; how do I get started?
Can I use an existing study as a template and just modify that to suit my needs? If so, how do I get this going?

Apologies for not seeing this before, but I was moving at the time. Unless you can code in ACSIL/C++, I can help you create a custom study from a Spreadsheet Study.
