As you can see in this image, the data for TICK-NYSE is completely different then my mentor's (both on 2 min chart), he's using Tradestation. Any idea why? Is there any way I can get accurate NYSE tick data with Sierra? https://cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0598/6757/files/iinaccurate-tick-data.jpg |

Hi TropicalTrader, I’m a fellow trader like you. You should read everything here on how SC calculates their NYSE tick: Sierra Chart Market Statistics: Calculations and Algorithms You should also read this section on comparing to different trading platforms: Sierra Chart Market Statistics: Market Statistics Calculations Compared to Other Data Services It can be seen that they are different, but why do you surmise that one or the other is more or less accurate? Perhaps they just use different formulas. |

Based on the below definition I don't understand why there is such a huge difference. I watch the recap videos from my mentor in the evening and he explains how he used the Tick data to help inform his trades. The data I have is totally different. Example: in the image I provided today, the Tick on my mentors chart barely got below 0 and only hit -600 once, on my chart it hit -600 over a dozen times. My mentors Tick chart showed the true strength of the market, my Tick chart made it look like the market was a lot weaker then it was. I can't use this info for anything helpful. My mentor has been doing this for 15 years and is an expert (consistently profitable) trader. (( What is the Tick Index? The tick index compares the number of stocks that are rising to the number of stocks that are falling on the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE). The index measures stocks making an uptick and subtracts stocks making a downtick. For example, there are roughly 2,800 stocks listed on the NYSE. If 1,800 stocks have made an uptick and 1,000 stocks have made a downtick, the tick index would equal +800 (1,800 – 1,000). )) |

SC provides other market stats symbols that can give you more information about how the tick is being calculated at a particular time: -- NYSE-DTIS: The number of stocks that traded at a lower price compared to the previous price or compared to the prior close at the first trade of the day. This is used in the TICK calculation. -- NYSE-UTIS: The number of stocks that traded at a higher price compared to the previous price or compared to the prior close at the first trade of the day. This is used in the TICK calculation. Does TradeStation provide those? If so you could see how many stocks each platform is counting as an uptick vs a downtick at any given moment. One other important thought as to why the SC NYSE-TICK might have higher extremes is that it is being calculated more often. For instance, in this thread SC explains their tick calculates 6x more often then the IQFeed tick: Why Sierra Chart TICK-NYSE Market Statistic Calculation is Very Good | Post: 118589 Perhaps it calculates more often then the TradeStation NYSE-TICK as well. That would have the effect of the SC TICK having larger extremes than the TradeStation tick. SC Engineering likely can't see the formula that TradeStation uses to calculate their TICK so there's not much they can do to help. They believe their calculation is accurate. Also, why use the NYSE-TICK to trade ES futures? The SP-TICK would be better because it actually is for the stocks that are in the S&P500. |

Thank you for your post 1+1=10, I really appreciate it! So I made a new tick study based on UTIS-DTIS and as you can see in this image, its much more similar to my mentor's chart. This gives me more confidence in using the Tick. To answer your question, my mentor said that he has used both NYSE and SP tick over the years and he prefers NYSE tick because it gives him a better sense of the overall market sentiment, using this info yesterday he said it was reflective of initiative buying - even though the session was quite choppy and I was wondering in the first hour if it was distributing. https://cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0598/6757/files/UTIS-DTIS.jpg For anyone reading this who wants to know how I got the new chart: Open UTIS-NYSE Open DTIS-NYSE Create study subgraph and add DTIS Use Study Subgraphs difference for UTIS-DTIS On your price chart use a study price overlay to add the newly created tick chart |
