can I work on one chart with a live account and in another chart on a sim account?
I would like to trade live and to track potential other trading systems
how do I do that?

Simulation mode is a global setting. So it affects all open Chartbooks/Charts within an instance.

The best way to do what you are asking for is to use a Sub-Instance, which are completely independent. This way one can be live and the other simulated. Refer to the information here:

Both instances are using the same data, which is whatever the main instance is connected to.

so why when i open the 2nd instance and opened my regular charts, the 2nd instance was downloading historical data (which according to your answer, I already have)?

They are completely separate installations. So although it is getting the data from the Main Instance, it is still creating a copy of the data in there. Due to the Sierra Chart architecture, this is necessary.

where the 2nd instance's data folder is located?

Each instance is in a folder under the Main Sierra Chart installation named SierraChartInstance_# where # is the instance number. The data folder is then under that folder.

But, do not try to setup the data to not be replicated. That will only cause problems for Sierra Chart. Again, this setup is how it needs to be for the way the system is architected.

You should do the compiling from the Main instance. That will ensure that the study is copied to the sub-instances when they are started.

But there is no way to change the folder that is used for compiling.
