I am confused by the different options allowed in SC to possibly do this. Can I have a spreadsheet dynamically update and show only the stocks which are above the 50 or 200d moving average? Can this be done without using or linking the spreadsheet to charts? Please point me to the right solution.

Yes it can be done by using the Study Summary window and chart studies. We can put together an example for you for an additional cost. Maybe 25 USD. Or you can do this by just using the Add Additional Symbol study and the Moving Average study based on the Add Additional symbol studies. You then need to set an alert on the moving average and the data will be displayed in the Study Summary window with highlighting for those studies with alerts that are true.
