How to get pivots to not include prices when the market is closed, but...

Hi SC,
I am trying to use the camarilla pivots which are formula 5. I don't want them to include the highs and lows of when the market is closed, but I want to keep that time visible on the chart.

It seems that when I keep the closed sessions on my chart it messes up the pivot calculation.

Is there a way to keep the closed session on my chart so I can see the price action, but have the pivot calculation not include these values because the market is closed?

Thanks,
Frank

It sounds like you do not want to study to include evening session trading activity.

One way to accomplish this is to follow the instructions here:

Thank you. That sounds like it will work, but it seems like a lot of work. When I am trading I don't have time to call up the study on one chart and then add it to another. I like for the study to automatically populate on the chart when I open it.

Do you think it would be possible to add a 'yes' 'no' question to the settings and inputs for the Camarilla Pivots formula (Formula 5)? The question would be include data from pre and post-market hours? Yes or No.

Actually the formula for the Camarilla pivots are the H/L/C from the previous day. They should never include prices when the market is closed. There are glitches all the time during these hours. For example, look at the SPY after it closed yesterday. It has spike downs several points. These were never real prices, but mess up the formula as it stands in SC. So regardless of whether or not you have pre and post market times on your chart, they should never include prices during those times.

Is this the place, if even possible, to ask if the formula can be corrected or at least give you the option to have the pre and post market data on your chart, but not have it included in the formula?

This way every time you switch symbols it automatically gives you the correct pivots for that symbol.

Let me know your thoughts.

Thanks,
Frank

Actually now that we understand the problem and the symbol being used, the solution is to set the Pivot Points study to refer to a Historical Daily chart for the data.

Refer to the instructions here:

I cannot seem to get the Camarilla pivots to work. Not sure if I should be using the Daily Pivot study or the Variable. The way the formula works is it takes the high, low and close for the prior day and generates a series of pivot points that can be plotted on an intraday chart the following day.

For example, for SPY the camarilla pivots for today March 14,2016 are as follows:
R4 204.57
R3 203.66

Pivot Point 201.70

S3 201.86
S4 200.95

I can't seem to get any variation of Formula 5 to calculate those pivot points.

Can you double check to see if the formula is accurate?

Thanks,
Frank

Once again follow the instructions here to reference a Historical Daily Chart:

Are you using the "Daily Pivot" or the "Variable Pivot"?

When I use the Daily Pivots it shows R4 at 203.66 which should be R3 and my pivot point is 202.22 which should be 201.70.

I can't figure out what you are doing differently to get them correctly.

Did you open a Historical Daily chart for the symbol SPY and set the Pivot Points-Daily study to reference it?

Yes. I think I have it now. I did not realize that I needed it to reference data from a historical daily chart to be accurate. It does take an extra chart to be open, but now that I have them all linked they update automatically when I switch. Just an FYI, for the Camarilla pivots they always use the prior day H/L/C. It would be a nice feature to have in the formula to simply use the H/L/C from the previous day. This way you do not need to have it reference a daily chart. I have a lot of charts open during the trading day and the way it stands I have to have an extra chart open for all the stocks I am following since I use the Cama pivots a reference points. Again, just a thought. Thanks for all of your help!
Best,
Frank
