We can not help with your not having any Volume Control in your Volume Mixer. That is an operating system issue. For other items to check for alert sounds not working, refer to the following: General Settings Window: Troubleshooting for Alert Sounds That Do Not Play In terms of alerts not showing/occurring when you are expecting them to (Close 5 minutes ago), then you need to look into why the alert is not working. In particular, check to see if the alert is present, and is set to "enabled" and verify that everything looks correct. There would have to be some problem with the alert if it is not working as you are expecting.
