The comparison is done to the settlement price: https://www.cmegroup.com/trading/metals/precious/gold_quotes_settlements_futures.html#tradeDate=08%2F19%2F2020 And we can see the exchange has already transmitted the settlement price for trade date 2020-08-19. Normally we would expect that to come after 5 PM US Eastern time. But it is been sent earlier. Not sure why. The calculation is based upon exchange data.
