is there a way to change the colour of a control bar button once it's clicked on so it shows your using the particular tool assigned to that button?

There is not a way to set a separate color for when the button is depressed. The buttons do change to a "crosshatched" look to denote they are depressed.

Sorry - "crosshatched" was not the correct term (I was confusing myself with another system I worked on). The color is changed to a "lighter" version of what is set for the color to denote that the button is depressed. Keep in mind that this will only apply to buttons that have a toggle state, such as the selection for a drawing tool. If the button just performs an action, such as opening the "Find Symbol" window, then it will not have a "depressed" state so it will not change the color.
