John, I hope you can help explain what I am seeing in the chart attached. I posted this in Jay Strizz discord room and even the quant Poppa couldn't figure it out. In the attached screenshot you will see 1 min ES chart, with volume plotted as a line. You can see I have a very short lookback(so I can see how accurate it was), but the moving median in yellow makes no sense. How can it be higher than the highest volume level in the 5-bar lookback?

I hope you see I don't ask stupid questions anymore, I tried to ask other people, but they didn't understand it either. Thank you John for your time.

The image is too small for us to understand. Do you have the original image?

Also, rather than using the Moving Median, we would suggest using the "Moving Average - Simple", which is much more straightforward in terms of how it is calculated. You will find the math defined for each at their respective links:

so again the question is if I have this set to length of 5, meaning it looks at last 5 bars, and it's looking at the median of those five bars, how can the yellow line be a higher level than any of the individual bars it's looking at?

And I will consider a simple moving average, but this question has stumped a bunch of smart guys(not me being smart haha)

thank you

The first thing that comes to mind is what is the Scale for the Moving Median study? Make sure this is set to "Automatic" or "Same as Region". Refer to the following:

How much do I love you? What I hadn't done is switch 'based on' in the settings and input tab from main chart graph to volume. You da best. Thanks mate, Karen

Hi John,
Rats this still seems like it is not working. Look at screenshot please. I have lookback set for 10 bars/mins on this 1 min chart. You see there is no bar in that time anywhere near what moving median is plotting. I have the study set to look at volume. What am doing wrong? Just to confirm, this study should show me the median(the value in the middle of the 10 bars), so how can the study show a value higher than any of the bars...

Sorry to bother you, but I still must have something off on settings. Or I don't understand what a median is haha

This is a scaling issue.

Since the Volume uses a scale of "Automatic Zero Based", the Moving Median is not matching up correctly. We are not sure why exactly. But we can tell you that the solution is to set the "Moving Median" to use the same scale option - "Automatic Zero Based".

Hi John,
I have a theoretical question for you re coding something. The reason why I am asking questions about changes in volume is because it directly impacts the effectiveness of a tool I created and had coded. The tool is laser-accurate when set on a volume chart that reflects current conditions. Since I know nothing about coding(I know you are laughing...duh Karen haha) could I have a coder/programmer have a chart automatically update every 15 min to whatever the median moving average volume is? Is it possible to automatically do what I manually have to do...chart>chart settings>bar period>bar period value (this is where I change it from 1000 to 800 say...), and do this every 15 min?

So a theoretical is this something I could have a crafty coder do for me? Thank you for your time, and I promise the last question on volume...

Karen

Yes, it is possible to create a custom study that sets the bar period based on some other information (such as the Median Moving Average). And you can have this done every 15 minutes. Refer to the following for a list of potential programmers, if you do not already have one:
