[User Discussion] - charts disappearing

i've spent a lot of time today setting up a number of charts and to my dismay they have all disappeared...

the .cht files are present however the display of the chart is missing on the screen.

when i look in the <data> folder, it shows the file as 48 B which doesn't look right.

i've attached 2 files for reference. the first shows my chartbooks and the second shows my blank screen after selecting a chart

can someone please shed some light ASAP?

We do not know what might have occurred. The first thing to check is whether your hard drive is full and that is why it may not have saved out.

If you have enough space, then check your backups and see if there is a backup of the chartbook available. Refer to the following:

hi john, it's worrying that you don't know what might have occurred. there is ample space on my drive. i've raised this issue now but it's not the first time it's happened to me. i'm worried moving forward it will continue to happen and a lot of time goes into setting up the charts to the way i want them.

after saving the charts i can access them but after a random amount of time (a few days maybe) the file sizes shrink to 4 B and the charts disappear.

my computer is brand new btw

Are you doing anything with where these are saved? For instance are you saving the data to a shared drive of some type? Or are you running some kind of backup software on the files?

Basically, we are wondering if there is some third party software that you are using that may be trying to access the files which is then, in turn, corrupting them.

SafSaf - Just some tips on what I do for what it is worth....

- google "FreefileSync". I use this fantastic software to "hot" backup all my files to keep in sync and avoid losing any work in SC. Just clone the entire SC folder and if something gets messed up, switch the folder from last backup and move on instead of trying to figure out what the hell did I do or blame it on the platform. Assume or relying on SC support to solve every problem I run into is just not feasible!
- use "duplicate chart" feature every time I attempt to make any changes. Never ever start new work from scratch. There is so many darn configuration parameters in SC, it is easy to fudge things up if you are not careful.
- use the setting to doing a "save all" automatically every x minutes to avoid losing any work and also on platform close.... without fail.
- "settle" on a standard chart settings configuration window so you don't have to spend time fudging with it every time. Use symbol settings to keep your chart configuration in sync when you switch or use different instruments to automatically use your chosen settings.
- Also, please understand that somethings within SC are dependent on behaviors driven by windows operating system. Unless you have a technical background to troubleshoot, it is best to protect your work on a USB drive for quick restoration and move on forward with your life :-

Thanks for all your help. I've now worked out what the issue was... just in case someone else comes across this same problem, let me elaborate;

When I finish with my chart, I go to file > save. Then I close the chart down by clicking the 'x' on the top right of the window.

However, the tab is still open at the top of the screen for the chartbook, so I go back to file > close chartbook. Another small screen asks me if I want to save again, and I've been saying yes, but there is no chart on the screen, so it's been saving it again with no chart... hence my charts disappearing!

Very annoying that it asks twice or doesn't close down.

Glad you were able to sort this one out. I also want to share a far more simplified approach when it comes to how I treat Chart, chartbook, study collections and twconfig files. In my mind, I now consider them as one 'object'. I am moving away from the monkey business of saving study collections and trade ticket configuration files into it's own unique filenames. It is so much easier from version control and dev > test > live life cycle management standpoint to just save it all into ONE chartbook file as a whole. I have also got rid of maintaining "release notes" in notepad++. Nowadays, I save it all in the Alert formula window as freeform text (with subgraph set as "Ignore". This way, when I open a chartbook, I know for damn sure, which SIM account it is tied to via attached trade ticket to the chart, for which instrument(s), what attached order settings is used in trade ticket etc etc. No more messing around with notepads and tradelogs in excel to keep track of my backtesting results etc. When I move the chartbook to Live/Forward testing, I simply duplicate the chart in the SAME chartbook so ONE chartbook for each traded instrument with two replica of charts....one for testing and another one for live trading with studies and attached trade ticket pointing to live account. That's all there is to it !
