Can you provide the best method for charting the WTI 321 Crack spread? is it best to use custom symbol or studies, either way please provide detailed instructions.

example formula is (-3*{CL*1} + 2*42*{RB*1} + 42*{HO*1})/3

I have used the custom method and have a chart working but cannot download past data or find a way to roll forward other than to re create, tried these two methods of which the first works

(-3*{CLV23_FUT_CME}+2*42*{RBCLV23_FUT_CME}+42*{HOCLV23_FUT_CME})/3

(-3*{CL?##_FUT_CME}+2*42*{RB?##_FUT_CME}+42*{HO?##_FUT_CME})/3

Can this be improved, please advise

The only way to move to a new contract is to redo the custom calculated symbol as you have done in the first line.

In that case can you advise the best way to do this using the spread and sub-graph divide studies, I have attached my chart-book with the chart #1 called Crack spread 3:2:1 but I am not getting the correct pricing as in the custom symbol chart #8, this method is preferred as I can record historical prices, I hope this makes sense and shows the reason for this post.

I thought I had this working but when I rolled the contracts over the price was no longer accurate?

Thank you for your help

What exactly is wrong with the price?

Please give us a screenshot of what you are seeing - as we can not use your Chartbook since we do not have the symbol setup.

The chart on the left of the previous image is the custom symbol, this is not ideal as I need to be able to chart more data and roll forward. the chart on the right is using two studies. The price is not correct since rollover and I cannot workout whats wrong, can you confirm I am using the correct method and if not, provide the correct method?

see attached chart setting

Thank you

Based on how your "Crack spread 3:2:1" is setup we are not sure how you got anything to display. In fact, you should not have, as you had the "Study Subgraph Divide" set to be the Main Price Graph, and since the "Based On" was set to "Main Price Graph", you had it dividing itself.

Also, the Study Subgraph Divide only gives you a single value - the Last. If you want to see bars then you have to do this a different way.

Since you are wanting to view the spread using the Continuous Data, you would have to have a total of 4 charts. 3 are the standard charts for RV, HO, and CL, and the 4th can be any symbol - you just need this fourth to bring in the data from the other 3. In the 4th chart use 3 copies of the Study/Price Overlay to bring in the data from the other 3 charts.

Then you would use the "Spreadsheet Formula - Bar" to display the spread by entering in a formula for each item - Open/High/Low/Close. The Formula would look like the following for the Open:
=(-3 * ID1.SG1 + 84 * ID2.SG1 + 42 * ID3.SG1)/3

Where ID1 is the overlay for the CL, ID2 is the overlay for the RB and ID3 is the overlay for the HO.

Where the ID of each study would stay the same, but the SG numbers will change for each item - Open/High/Low/Close.

You could then set the Spreadsheet Formula - Bar to be the Main Price Graph.

Thank you, I will give it a go, if I just want a line and not bars, would I need the spreadsheet? also on the 4 charts is it the chart 1 that can be anything?

If you just want a line, then use the "Spreadsheet Formula" study and enter the information appropriately to get the Last.

The chart that can be anything is the chart on which you will add everything. The reason for this is that you are wanting to set the final item to be the Main Price Graph, in which case you can not have anything based on the "Main Price Graph".

If you are not wanting to display any information as the Main Price Graph, then this does not matter.

I have setup the charts as per your instructions using OHLC, a couple of things still

1. When I first applied the studies I got one bar forming with the correct price, I then went to chart settings and changed the data limiting and applied, I then got 12 identical bars for each bar period, I noticed that the source charts were on 60m and the main chart was 5m so assumed it was plotting 12 bars (5m) for each (60m) anyway when I changed the main chart to 60m it corrected? do these charts need to be linked for bar period etc

2. Are there any default settings that need changing in the studies like number of bars to calculate on spreadsheet bar?

Should the study price overlays have the symbol study to overlay set to Main Price Graph or Base Graph?

Also in the case of doing a chart for a butterfly using ratio's could you provide a sample line for the formula

example this is the code for TOS in relation to a bond fly /ZF - (/ZT*.56) - (/ZN*.33) is it possible to represent this in the same way?

Thank you, you have been very helpful

I may have answered my last question but would appreciate you checking it I used =(ID1.SG1 - .56 * ID2.SG1 - .33 * ID3.SG1)?

Something is wrong though! on both charts, if I make any changes it refreshes to one single bar, I then find if I open chart settings and just click OK it loads all data? very strange hence my previous questions on settings

The charts all need to be the same bar period for this to work properly.

In terms of the Spreadsheet Formula, the only other setting you should have to change is the number of bars to calculate, as this may not be enough for what you want.

So I should link the charts then?
did the formula =(ID1.SG1 - .56 * ID2.SG1 - .33 * ID3.SG1) look OK?

There does seem to be a bug in this solution as mentioned in previous reply, any change made even changing bar period, refreshes with a single bar? opening chart settings and clicking OK seems to be the only way to get full data back.

Many thanks

Linking the charts would be useful, particularly if you are changing the bar period.

The formula looks fine.

We are not sure about the "bug" you are stating. First make sure the charts are all the same bar period and have enough bars loaded, then if you see this again please take a screenshot for us to see.

Hi John

I have uploaded a screenshot https://www.sierrachart.com/image.php?Image=1693586589362.png

I think the bug is related to the Spreadsheet formula (Bar) study, if I make any changes to this study and then click Apply and OK the screenshot shows the result, as mentioned, If I then open chart settings and press OK it reloads the chart data
like this https://www.sierrachart.com/image.php?Image=1693586964477.png

Hope this helps
Many thanks for your help

With the uploaded chartbook, When you open it, there is no display? Open chart settings on the main chart and just click OK and the data will load.

When we opened the chartbook everything displayed correctly.

We have not had time to delve into this deeper, so give us a few more days to be able to look into this.

We think we know what is occurring - since you have the "Spreadsheet Formula - Bar" set to be the Main Price Graph, this sets the priority for that study to be the highest one, therefore the system is calculating that study prior to the "Study/Price Overlay" studies being calculated. Therefore, it does not have the information it needs to display properly.

This is going to sound a bit odd, but the solution is to not set the "Spreadsheet Formula - Bar" to be the "Main Price Graph" in the chart where you have it right now. Rather, just make it another study in another region, you can even hide it if you want. Then you will need one more chart of any symbol (it doesn't matter) and use a "Study/Price Overlay" to get the "Spreadsheet Formula - Bar" information into that chart. Then set the "Study/Price Overlay" to be the Main Price Graph in that chart.

Let us know how this goes for you.

Hi John

This is very messy, It's clear that SC needs a solution to spread charting, If you look at something like TOS they have a simple spreader, TT has easy solution, just type in the formula and you get the chart?

I have spent some time on this and the attached chart is the simplest method I have managed to achieve, I would appreciate you checking it, it seems to work!

Are there any plans to simplify this?

Kind regards
Steve
