In a Spreadsheet, what exactly causes cell J41 to update or not? I keep having problems where it doesn't update for up to many seconds - 10 or more sometimes - and it's making it very difficult to build what I'm trying to build. Everything I'm doing works perfectly if I happen to catch J41 when it's updated, but way too often it just doesn't. I'm using ISSAMETIMETOSECOND() to make certain things happen only when an order has been moved, which means I need to compare J41 to other things and it fails way too often. I can of course use ISSAVETIMETOMINUTE and it will always work, but only once in any give minute which isn't ultimately acceptable for my purposes.

Is there in fact any way to force J41 to keep up with real time? I've also tried adding the Chart Recalculation Periodic study and it didn't seem to make a reliable difference.

In a word: No.
J41 only keeps up with real time if there is a chart update.

Much the same as a 1 second chart in a slow market, where new bars are not created unless and until there is new data.

If you are seeing a 10 second wait between J41 updates, you are either looking at a slow market, or your system has significant lag.

Hmmm... well I'm looking at ES and yes it is much worse after hours, so that makes sense. But even during the first couple hours of RTH I'm running into frequent problems around this. I don't know what would be lagging my system... it's a decently fast machine, lots of RAM, SC pared down about as far as I can go with regards to # of days of data, # of charts, # of visuals, etc. But I'll explore that and see if I can spot anything that could be a factor. Thanks for the insight, disappointing as it is.

Well... I just went through and removed absolutely every single study that reported a ms of greater than zero, but no change whatsoever. Don't know if there's anything else to look at. In fact even a brand new blank chartbook with 1 day of data and the default SSfT study on it still has easily 3 to 5 seconds or more between updates for J41 at this time of day. Very unfortunate.

OK I've been looking into this further and I'm very confused.

I'm tracking when the update is stalling. And I can see countless cases where J41 is not updating at all - just sitting, frozen for 10-20 seconds - yet I can see prices and volume updating in the order book and on my charts.

So doesn't this means things are updating but the spreadsheet isn't?

So on further investigation, it appears that while pricing/liquidity data may change constantly, the spreadsheet apparently doesn't update unless a trade has executed. Spreadsheet updates only occur when an actual trade executes against the tape, from what I'm seeing. Does this sound about right?

Yes.
It won't update for bid/ask vol changes, nor bid/ask price changes, (J12-J15) unless there is also a trade there.
