I noticed that when I am doing nothing with Sierra charts it shows up as using 12% to 14% of my cpu in the Task Manager display of Windows. I have a chart book open and it is displayed on my screen but I am disconnected from the data feed and not doing anything. Is this normal?

No, that is not normal. There are a couple of reasons why this occurring. One of them could be the Countdown Timer study.

I don't use the countdown timer study. I did notice that if I minimize the Sierra Charts window the usage drops to zero, but if I restore it the usage goes right back up.

I see a message that a chart has tagged another chart for recalculation appear periodically; these are 2 charts where a study is overlaid from one to the other. That message does not appear when I am doing nothing and am disconnected from the data feed and the cpu usage by Sierra Charts shows 8 to 10 %. I checked all the charts in this chartbook and none have more than 30 days of data loaded. There is one daily chart which I use the continuous futures symbol on. I have been reading through topic 30 but so far I don't see what would be causing this. Any other ideas?

So I removed the study overlay and no longer get the "tagged for recalculation" message. But SierraChart.exe still is using 10% or more of my cpu when it is just displayed on the screen, not connected to a data feed and I am not doing anything with it besides looking at the display.

Select File >> Close All Chartbooks. Does the CPU usage of Sierra Chart drop to 0%?

If so, provide us the Chartbook that causes CPU usage when Sierra Chart is not connected to the data feed. Here are instructions:

The cpu usage does drop to 0% when I close this chartbook. I have attached the chartbook and spreadsheet files.

We notice about 0 to 1% when disconnected from the data feed when testing this Chartbook. We would expect it would always be at 0% and we do not know where the majority of that CPU usage is coming from.

It certainly is not any charts being calculated and that we can say with certainty. That is the main thing that we check for.

What do you have the Global Settings >> General Settings>> Chart Update Interval set to. Make sure it is not less than 200.

I had it set at 100. I changed it to 200 and after the charts reloaded my cpu usage is between 7% and 10%. Before this change it was 10% to 14%. Still when I minimize the Sierra window it goes to 0% but jumps right back to 7% to 10% when I restore the window.

We have discovered the problem. It is from Chart Drawings been copied from one chart to another chart. There was a recent change with this involving the comparison of additional flags and one flag should not have been compared.

This will be resolved in the next release coming out later this evening.

Thanks for working on this problem. When I go to download menu, there is only a prelease new spreadsheets option. I use old spreadsheets in the chartbook with the problem. Will you have an oldsheet release with the fix?

No. Support for Old Spreadsheets has been discontinued:

You need to move over to New Spreadsheets when you can.

What we recommend you do is to install another copy of Sierra Chart on your System and transfer your files over:

In your own time, you can work with New Spreadsheets until you get everything working properly.

However, if you are using Sierra Chart through TransAct you can only use one copy on your system. So you will need to use your own direct account:

Is there a date when you won't support old spreadsheets at all?

Do you have a conversion program that converts old spreadsheets to new, or any other type of aids? It would be a monumental task to manually recreate and test every spreadsheet I have over to the new format. Is there at least some type of checklist that defines everything that needs to be changed? I have tried copying an old spreadsheet into a chartbook using the new spreadsheet software and it was barely recognizable with many formula cells lost or not working as they did before.

No specific date. You can expect you will be able to use them for at least 3 years.

When you are using the version of Sierra Chart which supports New Spreadsheets and you open an Old Spreadsheet using the file extension scwbf it will be automatically converted.

OK. So I thought I give this a fresh start so I downloaded the new spreadsheet version of Sierra Charts. When I opened the chartbook which I sent to you, the charts all looked ok but the new .scss spreadsheet was missing all my formulas in several of the sheets. The studies are in the sheets, but for chart #'s 5, 7, 9 and 12 all of my formulas are gone. I am attaching a copy of this new converted version of the spreadsheet I sent to you earlier this week.

We will not be spending any further development time or time analyzing the program that converts an Old Spreadsheet to a New Spreadsheet. Unless it is a simple problem where only a certain number of Sheets are copied. So we will make sure that all of the Sheets are copied.

What we can possibly help with is if there is a particular formula you are using which is not supported in New Spreadsheets, we will see how we can help with that. So if some formulas did not copy over to the New Spreadsheet, you will need to manually enter them.

If you have a complex Spreadsheet set up this is not necessarily an easy process for you and we are not claiming that it is. So it is not something which should be rushed. You need to take your time and work on the conversion.

The problem with the converted spreadsheet I sent you isn't that just some of the formulas didn't copy over, it's that on several of the sheets NONE of the formulas copied over. Seems like a problem that should be addressed imo.

Regarding problems with specific formulas, here is one I tried reentering from old to new and it gives me a syntax error on the new spreadsheet:

We will not be spending further time on the conversion program, other than verifying that all Sheets in the Spreadsheet are converted/copied to the New Spreadsheet.

We will add support for SUMPRODUCT assuming there are no complications with that.

However, what is the underlined part in this formula:

It is my understanding that the INDEX/MATCH combo in the New Spreadsheets is highly inefficient relative to the Old Spreadsheets. Are there any plans to address this?

The INDEX/MATCH combination is very inefficient in the New Spreadsheets, when used in a row 3 cell. However, if you use it in a non-repeating cell, the inefficiency is negligible.

As a temporary solution to the original problem involving Chart Drawings, go to each of the charts in the Chartbook and select Tools >> Manage Chart Drawings Window. Remove any unnecessary drawings.

And only copy Chart Drawings from other charts, when necessary.
