Log of Changes and Improvements to Sierra Chart

This list contains major items of development, and changes and additions which users need to be informed about.

This is not a comprehensive changes and additions log. And it should never be relied upon for such. It only represents a very small percentage of the actual development being performed every day. The vast majority of development is not documented here. Or receives, one small comment after it is all complete. There are not version notes for each version. The main Sierra Chart documentation is updated as needed relating to the changes and additions.

The maintenance of this page has mostly been abandoned by Sierra Chart development for many years due to the difficulty of maintaining it and because users can be incorrectly misled by or misinterpret notes that are made here. This does not change, the development of Sierra Chart which is very active every day and new releases are made nearly weekly or several times a week. The Sierra Chart project is still very active, with extensive development and it remains a very high quality software in the world. The engineering is at the very top of the world.

    • Various low-level Performance enhancements related to market data processing. There will be continued performance enhancements in the coming months.

    • Support for server-side OCO orders when using the CTS T4 service has been added.
    • Historical Daily data for Historical charts is now downloaded directly from the CTS T4 service instead of our own sources. Therefore, when using the CTS T4 service, if you have Historical charts you will need to change the symbol of those charts to use the CTS T4 symbol. The symbol can be changed through Chart >> Chart Settings. The CTS T4 symbols can be found through File >> Find Symbol. The procedure at the present time to open a new Historical Daily chart when using T4 with this version is to first find the symbol in File >> Find Symbol, copy it and then past it in to the File Name box in File >> New/Open Historical Chart. Once this is done, your chart will be part of a chartbook or you can simply open it from the file listed in the Open File window.

    • When using the Adjust Regions tool and you are hovering over the boundary between chart regions, the dividing line that displays is thinner. It is now 2 pixels wide rather than 4 pixels wide. This is sufficient to see, however it is not too wide in case the Adjust Regions tool is always active when using other Tools.
    • There has been a 77% reduction of processing required to evaluate Simple Alerts. This improves the efficiency of Simple Alerts, the Color Bar Based on Alert Condition study and the Color Background based on Alert Condition study. This allows you to increase the Number of Bars to Calculate input significantly higher when using these studies without a significant increase in CPU load.

    • Various low-level improvements.
  • 749 Release Date: 2011-08-18

    • Corrected a problem with the trading Scale Out feature where both orders in an OCO group would not be canceled if one of them were to be canceled due to a Scale Out action. • Corrected some minor issues with editing of Global Symbol Settings.

    • Various low-level improvements.
  • 747 Release Date: 2011-08-12

    • New Option: Tool Settings >> Square Drawing Anchors, allows anchors to be drawn as squares vs circles.
    • New Option: Tool Settings >> Anchor Uses Drawing Color, if enabled, drawing anchors are drawn with same color as underlying drawing, otherwise they use the next option.
    • New Option: Tool Settings >> Anchor Color, if anchors are not using the drawing color, this color is used instead for all drawings.
    • New Menu Item: Tools >> Show Chart Drawings, when disabled, all user drawn chart drawings are hidden on all charts. There is a toolbar button for this function as well.

Therefor, this is a more correct term. The option to save the Internal Position data between sessions has been removed. It is now always saved between sessions.
    • Renamed Workbook and Worksheet to Spreadsheet. The documentation will be updated as soon as possible. All of the former Worksheet studies now begin with Spreadsheet. For example: Spreadsheet Study .
    • Included updated TransAct price feed interface files that have been provided by TransAct.
    • Revision 2: The Color Background Based on Alert Condition study was updated in a recent release to use the new Background Draw Style. This created a drawing problem with existing instances of this study on charts and in study collections. This has now been resolved and the Draw Style is now always forced to Background.
    • Beginning with version 731, for Spreadsheet studies, we force the input Support All Subgraphs to Yes. This is intended to be removed soon. It is an outdated input setting to maintain compatibility for custom Spreadsheet studies developed years ago. It is being removed to avoid any potential confusion and simplify the internal code. If your existing Spreadsheet Study configurations have it set to No, then you will need to examine how all of the study subgraphs are now outputted to the columns beginning at AA and update your formulas appropriately. Until then, avoid using versions 731 or greater if this change will affect your use of the Spreadsheet studies.
    • Various low-level improvements.
  • 745 Release Date: 2011-08-04

    • Fixed an issue with the new market statistics data feed where if there is an internal reconnection to the data feed, the updates for the market statistics symbols would not start. This has been resolved.

    • Improvements with the processing of the Trading Technologies data feed.
    • Corrected an issue that when there are a large number of cells highlighted on a Spreadsheet and the Spreadsheet is active, Sierra Chart could become sluggish when accessing the menus.
    • Renamed the Worksheet menu to Spreadsheet. Moved the commands that are specific to Spreadsheets from the Edit menu to the Spreadsheet menu.
    • Continued improvement to Drawing Tools.
    • New Bar Based Back Testing: Sierra Chart now has the capability to perform a high-speed back test using the loaded bar data on both Historical and Intraday charts. This type of back testing is less precise than using a replay from the data file records. Although, the advantage is that it is fast and works with Historical charts as well.

Attached Orders and the use of Trailing stops can still be used with this type of back test. The way we implement back testing in Sierra Chart is very much like real trading in the live market using actual order types.

To access this feature select Trade >> Auto Trade System Bar Based BackTest on the menu.

The results can can be viewed in Trade >> Trade Activity Log. And Trade >> Trade Positions Window.

Therefore, when you are using this version or higher and you are using user contributed studies, you may get an error with those studies and have to remove them from the chart and then add them again from the User Contributed Studies list.
    • Due to some changes in recent versions with the internal structure of the Toolbar, if you upgraded to one of these recent versions, the Toolbar buttons may have changed from your configuration. This has now been resolved and the Toolbar will have your prior configuration in this version. However, if you already made changes to your Toolbar to restore it to the way that you had it before after updating to a recent version, then with 741 you will notice a problem again and you will have to reconfigure your Toolbar. Going forward this will not be an issue.

    • Corrected a problem with deleting retracement/extension drawing levels under a certain condition.
    • Corrected a problem with the new Reversal Bars type.
    • When an Attached Order is canceled the other order in the same OCO group, is not automatically canceled. For example, this lets you cancel a Target or a Stop and the corresponding Stop or Target will remain in effect. The other order in an Attached Order group will still be canceled when one of them fills.
    • There has been a change with the ACSIL member sc.VolumeAtPriceForBars. The prices are now stored in Ticks as an integer rather than float values. Therefore, to convert to the actual price you need to use: float Price = it->first * sc.TickSize;. For the current code example, refer to the scsf_VolumeAtPriceArrayTest study function in the /ACS_Source/studies7.cpp file.
    • New option: Tool Settings >> Double Click Brings Up Drawing Properties.

    • Corrected some minor issues with the handling of the filter settings on the Trade >> Trade Activity Log window. Attached Orders that were submitted during a chart replay would not be displayed when Replay/Backtest is selected.
    • Corrected a problem with Numbers Bars where when using a small tick size, this would need to be .01 or smaller, the volume at a particular price level within a Numbers Bar may not have shown the total volume for that price level. This would only have affected some price levels. This issue has been resolved. Total volume calculations were not affected. Other volume related studies were not affected.
    • Various fixes to drawing tools related to the tool development that is ongoing.
    • New option: Tool Settings >> General >> AutoSnap Sensitivity - controls how sensitive the snapping is when moving the mouse.
    • New option: Tool Settings >> General >> Include Open/Close In AutoSnap - allows either OHLC or HL to be used in AutoSnap calculation.
    • Parallel Lines can now be moved as a group that maintains the original drawing shape. This can be accomplished with the context menu Move Line options or by selecting the middle portion of the original trend line (between two anchors).
    • Linear/Raff Regression Channels can now be moved as a group that maintains the original drawing shape and does not recalculate the channel. If the channel is adjusted, then the channel will recalculate.
    • Various low level improvements.
  • 737 Release Date: 2011-07-20

    • Added new Constant Range scale options to the Scale window. These are useful when using the Chart DOM and Trading DOM. For the fastest access to these options, right-click on the scale numbers on the right side of the chart or Trading DOM and select Scale. One of the options will cause automatic centering to always use the Last price when you are using Constant Range with Auto Centering , instead of the average price of the last 2 bars. The other option relates to automatic scale adjustments when using Constant Range scaling, to keep the High-Low of the last bar or the last trade price, in the case of a Trading DOM, always within view. This can be disabled if this kind of functionality is not desired when using the Trading DOM.

    • Continued improvements with drawing Tools. Resolve some issues with chart drawing selection for modification of a drawing.

    • Improvements to the Chart >> Chart Settings >> Continuous Futures Contract feature for creating futures continuation charts.
    • Various low level improvements.
  • 735 Release Date: 2011-07-18

    • Added support for Reversal Bars as a basic bar type. This is set through Chart >> Chart Settings >> Intraday Bar Period. This is very similar to the Point and Figure Chart study. This type is most useful when using the Numbers Bars Graph Draw Types. With this new Bar Period Type, there is no longer any need to use the Point and Figure chart unless you require some of the special features that it provides.
    • Improved the IQ Feed data feed connection and reconnection code.
    • Upcoming: Added support for two new Range Bar types: Gap Filled and True. Gap filled bars do exactly what is said and fill in the price gaps. True Range bars, are bars that have the specified Range in Ticks, if possible, and do not have any modification of the open, high, low and close values of the bar. These are pure unmodified range bars.
    • Updated the Parabolic study to reverse on the bar that intersects the parabolic value rather than the subsequent bar.
    • New option on Tools >> Settings >> General Tab >> Require SHIFT key for Click Thru of Multiple Drawings: By default this is on, and the click thru operates as it did previously, which requires the SHIFT key to be pressed to cycle thru multiple drawings that can be selected with the current mouse click. When you clear this option, click thru will work with no SHIFT key being pressed.
    • New option on Tools >> Settings >> General Tab >> Allow Drag To Modify Chart Drawing: By default this is off, and a mouse click is required to start a modification and a mouse click is required to place the final point. When turned on, the mouse down selects the anchor point and starts the modification, dragging continues the modification, and the mouse up places the final point.
    • New option on Tools >> Settings >> General Tab >> Keep Chart Drawing Selected After Modification: By default this is off, and drawings are not selected after a modification. When turned on, a chart drawing remains selected after being modified, so you can immediately modify the same or different anchor point.
    • Pitchfork was changed so the first portion of the center line can be selected to adjust the first point.
    • Linear Regression Tool / Raff Regression Channel
      • These have been reworked to be stand alone tools instead of just a group of trendlines.
      • The Raff Regression Channel was broke out to be a distinct tool type, was added to the Tools menu, and a toolbar button was added.
      • Both regression types can be cut/extended like normal extending trendlines. The cut just turns the extensions off, and does not "cut".
      • Both regression types can be used as targets for "Make Lines Parallel".
      • Each linear regression tool instance has its own levels that can be modified with the chart drawing properties dialog.
      • The adjust/move drawings work like other drawings. The anchors can be selected or the ends of the level lines can also be selected to adjust. Move allows the drawing to slide left or right. The channel will recalculate based on adjustment/movement.
    • Various low level improvements.

    • Various drawing tool related improvements.
    • Corrected a bug with loading continuous Intraday charts when using the Continous Futures Contract option in Chart >> Chart Settings, where the chart's main symbol would be loaded more than once. This problem may have caused duplicate data in the chart, and a point where the timestamps jump back to the beginning of the file.

      • Copying: A copy can be performed by using the methods described above while also pressing the Control key on your keyboard at the time you do the second click with your pointer.
      • Deleting: Do a single left click on the drawing you want to delete. Press to Delete key to delete it. You can click on multiple drawings before pressing the Delete key.
      • You will still be able to right-click on a drawing to perform any of these actions as well.
    • Various improvements to tools, including the Pitchfork tool.
    • Corrected some issues relating to the new tool development.
    • The Hand tool now supports vertical chart movement and scaling as well. To enable this, select Global Settings >> Tool Settings >> General and enable Support Vertical Scaling/Movement with Hand Tool.
    • Corrected a problem where order submission to Trading Technologies, for order types which require prices would fail for some futures contracts. This was a minor rounding issue that apparently became a problem on the new TT FIX Adapter.
    • Corrected a problem from the prior prerelease where order modifications would fail when using some trading services.
    • Can now change the background colors of the ChartDOM. This can be set with the ChartDOM Ask Background and ChartDOM Bid Background color settings in the Global Settings >> Graphics Settings window.
    • Various low-level improvements.

    • Continued improvements with the Trading DOM and ChartDOM. A Profit/Loss column can be added with different formats. This is added through Global Settings >> Customize Trade DOM/ChartDOM Columns. To change the format of what is displayed in the new Profit/Loss column, click on the header of the Profit/Loss column on the ChartDOM.
    • The Chart >> Perform Futures Symbol Rollover command, now has the original functionality to Join Previous Data as well as only rollover the symbol and not join in the previous contract data.

    • Internal changes with the integration to the CTS T4 trading service. This resolves an issue where the trade volume was not always accurate for a trade received from the data feed.
    • Corrected various charting and data recording issues when using symbol suffixes such as -BIDASK and potentially other ones as well.
    • Improvements with downloading historical data when using the CTS T4 service.
    • Continued development of the new Continuous Futures Contract feature in Chart >> Chart Settings >> Symbol. This feature now works properly with Historical Daily charts. This feature will load in historical data from prior futures contracts to create a continuous futures contract chart. The rollover from one contract to another is dynamically managed.
    • Code changes with the Trading Technologies data feed integration. There is now accurate as possible identification of whether a trade is at the bid or ask which improves the accuracy of Bid Volume and Ask Volume. This should also lessen the occurrence of Inside Trades in the Time and Sales window. However, be aware that these changes depend upon an accurate data feed from TT. If the data feed is not accurate with regard to bid and ask data, then Bid volume and Ask volume will not be accurate either.
    • Added the function sc.Input[].GetSelectedCustomString() to ACSIL inputs. This function will return the actual text string for the currently selected custom text string for Study Inputs that use a custom list of text strings.
    • Corrected an issue with the Parabolic study when it is used on charts that have small values. This would be for symbols where the Price Display Format needs to be 0.000001.
    • Added the support for the following identifiers for Simple Alert conditions: DAILYHIGH, DAILYLOW, LASTTRADESIZE, BID, ASK, LASTTRADE, PREVIOUSDAYCLOSE. These values will be zero unless the symbol is active, valid and there is a connection to the Data or Trading service.
