Log of Changes and Improvements to Sierra Chart
This list contains major items of development, and changes and additions which users need to be informed about.
This is not a comprehensive changes and additions log. And it should never be relied upon for such. It only represents a very small percentage of the actual development being performed every day. The vast majority of development is not documented here. Or receives, one small comment after it is all complete. There are not version notes for each version. The main Sierra Chart documentation is updated as needed relating to the changes and additions.
The maintenance of this page has mostly been abandoned by Sierra Chart development for many years due to the difficulty of maintaining it and because users can be incorrectly misled by or misinterpret notes that are made here. This does not change, the development of Sierra Chart which is very active every day and new releases are made nearly weekly or several times a week. The Sierra Chart project is still very active, with extensive development and it remains a very high quality software in the world. The engineering is at the very top of the world.

835 Release Date: 2012-04-01
- Significantly improved the performance of the Zig Zag study when using labels on the Zig Zag lines. When the Additional Output for Spreadsheets input is set to Yes with this study and the Spreadsheet study is on the chart, this study will output the Reversal prices into a separate column on the spreadsheet.
- Renko Bars: In Chart >> Chart Settings, you will see a new Bar Period Type for Intraday charts named Renko in Ticks. This setting will let you create Renko bars direct from the underlying data in the data file. This is a huge advantage over the Renko Chart studies because there will be less memory use and faster loading times. This is what we recommend using going forward. The other primary advantage is that all of the Volume related studies, especially the Cumulative Delta Bars studies, are all 100% accurate with this new Renko bar.
- Some low-level improvements with position handling with the various Trading services. The synchronization of the Internal position data and the Service position data, if they are out of sync, is instantaneous now when a full refresh of position data is received from the Trading service.
- Significantly improved performance with Volume At Price data. Chart data loading times have been reduced about 40%. Memory use has been reduced about 40%. This data is required when using any of the following studies: Volume by Price, Volume Value Area Lines, Numbers Bars, Numbers Bars Additional Calculated Values, TPO Profile Chart. And any other studies requiring this data.
- Any custom studies that you have developed use the sc.VolumeAtPriceForBars ACSIL member will require code changes. For example code on how to work with the updated version of sc.VolumeAtPriceForBars , refer to the scsf_VolumeAtPriceArrayTest function in the /ACS_Source/studies7.cpp file provided with Sierra Chart.
- Various low level additions, changes and improvements.

- For Data and Trading services that both historical Minute and Tick data, we now have an improved procedure to download historical chart data from them. When you choose the option to download historical Intraday Tick data, Sierra Chart first will request Minute data if it is a longer-term data request. After that the historical Tick data will be downloaded. The Minute data and Tick data will be joined together, so you have a complete set of long-term history without any gaps. The maximum amount of historical Tick data will be requested and included in the chart data file. Prior to that, the historical data will consist of Minute data. There is nothing special you need to do for this feature. This all works automatically. However, one thing that you can do is select File >> Data/Trade Service Settings on the menu and increase the Maximum Historical Intraday Days to Download to the number of days that you require. One thing to be aware of with this method of downloading is that during the download process, you will not see the bars immediately appear on the chart, they will appear after the download is completed.
- This version no longer requires Windows Administrator level access when running. However, if you have Sierra Chart installed into a folder on your computer, such as the Program Files folder that prevents a program from writing into that folder, then Sierra Chart will not function properly unless you enable Run As Administrator in the Compatibility settings accessed from the Windows shortcut for Sierra Chart.
- The sc.UseTool() function has changed slightly in several ways:
- The s_UseTool.DrawingType member should be used to specify the drawing type instead of setting the s_UseTool.Tool number. The DrawingTypeEnum constants (DRAWING_TEXT, DRAWING_LINE, ...) need to be used instead of the old TOOL_* constants that were assigned to the s_UseTool.Tool field.
- Old code will continue to work without the above changes, but should be changed.
- All of the studies that Sierra Chart provides have been updated with the above changes where necessary.
- Windows 2000 is now supported again. Beginning with a recent release, it was not possible to run Sierra Chart on Windows 2000 and now it is.

- When an automated trading system modifies an order or cancels an order, and there is currently a pending modification or cancellation of that same order, the new modification or cancellation will be queued and will be processed when the prior operation completes. This has always been the case when Sierra Chart is performing its own order management. It should have been the case with order modifications from an ACSIL trading system. However, there was a decision previously that order cancellations should be immediately followed even if there is a pending operation on the order. This is no longer the case.
- When there is a manual modification of an order, and there is already a pending modification or cancellation of the order, then the modification will be queued and will be processed when the prior operation completes. When there is a manual cancellation of an order, it will be immediately processed as always without regard to whether there is current modification or cancellation on the order.
- Improved accuracy with Bid Volume and Ask Volume with the Trading Technologies data feed. Testing shows that it is still not 100% accurate, however it should be better.
- Various continued improvements and development with Trade statistics reporting, Trades reporting, and trade Profit/Loss values.
In the past Sierra Chart had limited trading statistics reporting. There were a few trading statistics fields maintained for each symbol listed in the Internal Positions tab of the Trade Orders and Positions window. These values would accumulate based upon the received order fills, until they were reset. It was not possible to have them start from a particular Date-Time unless you reset them at that particular time. Although in the case of a back test, they would be automatically reset and would indicate the trading results for the period of the back test. These old fields also would only have knowledge of the real-time fills received. They would not have any consideration of missing fills which were later downloaded by Sierra Chart. In recent months we have developed a new Trade Statistics and Trades tabs on the Trade >> Trade Activity Log window. These displays provide very detailed trading statistics and reporting of your trades for a specified period of time. These tabs also take advantage of missing fills which are downloaded from the Trading service server upon a connection to the Trading server. We have now removed all of the old fields from the Internal Positions tab of the Trade Orders and Positions window. All of the same data can now can be found on the Trade Statistics tab of the Trade Activity Log. In this version all of the development we have been doing in this area over the last few months is now considered finalized and a few outstanding issues have been resolved.
Additionally, each chart now maintains its own Trade Statistics and Trades list internally when needed. ACSIL trading systems and the Spreadsheet System for Trading study now obtain the trading statistics data they need from this new internal Trade Statistics data and Trades list within the chart. For example, the Closed Profit/Loss you see displayed on a Spreadsheet when using the Spreadsheet System for Trading study comes from the trading data maintained within the chart and it will represent the closed trades since start Date-Time of the chart. - If you have an ACSIL trading system that uses the trading statistics data in the s_SCPositionData structure, this includes CumulativeProfitLoss, WinTrades, LoseTrades, TotalTrades and TotalQuantityFilled, then sc.MaintainTradeStatisticsAndTradesData needs to be set to TRUE in the study function in order to have the data for these members maintained. All other members of the s_SCPositionData structure will be set regardless of how the sc.MaintainTradeStatisticsAndTradesData flag is set.
- The trade statistics cells (Daily Closed Profit/Loss, Cumulative Closed Profit/Loss, Win Trades, Lose Trades, Total Trades) outputted to a Spreadsheet when using the Spreadsheet System for Trading study now originate from the Trade Activity Log and are calculated from the first Date-Time in the chart and based upon the available fill data.
- The feature to display the Closed Profit/Loss in the Trade Window Internal position field box for Open Profit/Loss when the position is flat for the symbol, has been removed. You will now see the Daily Profit/Loss (DPL) displayed at the top left of the chart or Trade DOM. This represents the Profit/Loss for the day and also includes the Open Profit/Loss.
- There have been some internal changes with the storage of Time and Sales data. Any ACSIL study that uses sc.GetTimeAndSales needs to be recompiled on this version or higher to avoid compatibility issues which could lead to problems with reading the Time and Sales data and potentially stability issues. If you are using Visual C++, you just need to use the SierraChart.h header file from this version or higher when recompiling.
- When using a 1 Month profile period with the TPO Profile Chart study, it is now possible to specify a letter/block time period of less than 1 Day when using the TPO Profile Chart study on an Intraday chart.
- Various low level additions, changes and improvements.

- Change to Automated Trading Management: When the quantity of Working or Working Exit orders is calculated for the purpose of the management of automated trading orders, orders that are in an OCO (order canceled order) Group, are counted as a single order in this version and higher. For example, if there is a Sell Target and a Stop order (Attached Orders) in the same OCO group, each with a quantity of 2, this will be considered a total quantity of 2 rather than 4. Previously, this would be counted as 4. The reason for this change is that because one order will cancel the other, or when one order partially fills the other order in the same OCO group will be reduced by the partial fill quantity, then these orders should be counted as one order. It is highly recommended that if using Attached Orders with your automated trading system, that you first test your system in Trade Simulation Mode when upgrading to this version or higher to be certain your Trading system still functions OK with these changes.
