Hello,

Is there a way to plot a daily moving average on an intraday chart?

For example, I would like to put a 20 day simple moving average on a 1 hour chart.

Thanks,

ZS

Ok I was able to overlay the 20 day SMA on the 1 HR timeframe, however the values are different.

On the daily chart for XBTUSD the 20 day SMA as of 8:28 PM EST is 3727.3 but on the the 1 HR timeframe it's 3741.6.

I did double check the study settings (attached pic) and I believe they are all correct.

We ran a test and do not observe this. We see the latest moving average on the destination chart.

Try setting the Bar Time Matching Method study Input to Containing Match.

I've tried adjusting all the overlay study settings and I couldn't get the destination chart (XBTUSD 1 hr time-frame) to display the correct value from the source chart (XBTUSD daily time-frame).

With the exception of changing Match Source Bars To Destination Bars from Yes to No (which gave me the correct value for the 20 day simple moving average but compressed all the candlesticks).

I'm officially stumped. I've attached pics of the destination chart, the source chart, as well as the destination study settings and source study settings.

If something looks amiss, please let me know.

Thanks,

ZS

After trying some more, I believe that this discrepancy isn't due to pilot error.

Here are the only steps I'm taking.

1. Add Study/Price Overlay

2. Input Name: Study to Overlay (In:10)

3. Input Value: #1.ID2

4. Based On: <Main Price Graph>

5. Chart Region: 1

6. Value Format: Inherited

Results are in the attached picture. Source chart with correct 20 day SMA. Destination chart with incorrect 20 day SMA.

Attach those 2 charts as a Chartbook:

You need to also tell us the time zone for the Intraday chart. Refer to:

Thanks.

The file is attached.

Time zone is New York EST.

EDIT: I just added the study/overlay again, and now it's working perfectly fine. Strange.

Not so fast.

I just logged back into SC and the 20 daily moving average is incorrect again that is overlayed on the 1 hour chart.

The problem is that if you look at the historical daily chart, the date is in the next day. Make sure that chart itself is set to the New York time zone:
Time Zone Setting: Using Different Time Zone in Individual Charts

If you still have a problem use Intraday data instead for the daily bars:

Ok, I think I've made a breakthrough.

XBTUSD's clock runs off UTC (Universal) Time.

7 PM EST is equal to 0:00:00 UTC-5 Time and is the beginning of a new day.

So any time between 7:00 PM-11:59 PM EST will read as one day ahead.

Although this doesn't apply to intraday charts, which still show today's date.

Why the discrepancy between the two, I don't know......

But yes, if you could add UTC-5 time, I believe that will solve the problem. :)

Fiddling around a bit more, and I still can't fix things.

These are my settings on both the daily chart and the 60 minute chart (I believe the UTC Offset of -05:00 is equal to EST).

Chart Settings -> Advanced Settings -> Time Zone -> Other/Custom DST -> UTC Time Zone -> UTC -05:00

Global Settings -> Data/Trade Service Settings -> Time Zone -> Other/Custom DST -> UTC Time Zone -> UTC Offset -05:00

Not only is the study/overlay still incorrect, but time itself is incorrect when scrolling over candles on the 60 min chart.

I'm attaching another chartbook. Please let me know if there is a workable solution.

I've found a solution:

Put both the daily chart (source chart) and the 1 Hour chart (destination chart) to UTC (+0 UTC).

Chart Settings -> Advanced Settings -> Time Zone -> UTC (+0 UTC)

Global Settings -> Data Trade Service Settings -> Time Zone -> UTC (+0 UTC)

Works like a charm.

Specifically set the Time Zone on the Daily bar chart to US Eastern (New York). Not UTC -5.

When using Intraday data to create the daily bars, those daily chart bars will be slightly different compared to the actual historical daily data but that is how it has to be.
